Cheaper, yes. Better or on-par? No.
Here's your list of goalies that signed on July 1st through today. Varlamov is better than nearly all of them, save for Sorokin and maybe one or two others that you could make a fair argument on.

I'd infinitely prefer Varly at $2.75M than Reimer at $1.5M, Blackwood at $2.375M, Nedeljokvic at $1.5M and a handful of others - eichiefs9
I think the question is do you need to pay any goalie 2.75 mil when you have Sorokin

If he gets hurt, sure. But it's not like that extra $1M or so was going to allow them to go out and sign some big-name scorer. They can full bury Johnston's contract in Bridgeport if want an extra $1.1M.
But if Sorokin gets hurt and they had to throw some assbag like Reimer in there, they'd be hooped |

there really isnt any legit offer sheet threat out there for Lafreniere and K'Andre IMO, unless Seattle got frisky
they have no arbitration rights
Rangers could very well put the screws to one or both of them and they go into camp as holdouts, they have absolutely no leverage |

I mean I don't agree with that. Just harbors resentment. Have them sign bridge deals, then hopefully Drury can explore how to make the team better. |

Because fists
I have absolutely zero (frank)ing idea. Like he was going to be such a hot commodity that they desperately needed to lock him up for four years |

I know this will be met with some skepticism, but I can’t help but think Drury may not see Miller as a defenseman at all. It was strange he was drafted as a dman when I believe he only played one year at Wisconsin on defense. I’ve commented many times during the season that he’s a much better skater than nearly or better than everyone on the team. It won’t happen, but I’d seriously consider moving to the wing. Oh boy, what would that do to the forwards makeup. The possibilities are interesting. |

He switched positions sophomore year of high school. Played 5 total years as defense, 2 at Wisconsin, before going pro. To me the possibilities are limitless for him as a defenseman, given the relatively short amount of time he’s played and how gifted he is. He’s got the instincts for it and can shut guys down with ease

Thanks for the correction. It just seems with the current breakout most teams use today, defensemen lugging the puck up through center ice is really seen. Would love to see him skate instead of the dreaded dump out or shoot in. |

Hopefully the new coaching staffs got a plan for that |
