I liked Engvall, in a short window anyway, last year. But I don't know if that was the best use of $21M
A lot of people seem to hate the Varlamov contract but he's probably the best back-up in the league and his work load is going to be relatively minimal over the length of the contract. I don't have any problem with that one.

Yeah but paying almost 3 million dollar for back up goalie is tough sell to fans. If he was being paid about a million less, the conversation around his AAV isn't happening.

I don't have a huge problem with it, I see it as more of an insurance policy because if the Isles can't keep pucks out of the net...they'll be a lottery team. Because they sure can't put any in the net.
I'd rather have a cheap backup and a more offensively-talented forward group but clearly that doesn't seem to be in the cards
And I know Engvall's deal is only cheap because of the term. Overall I hate the contract but once they start shedding some older, overpaid vets and the cap goes up it will be manageable.

they also gave him a full no trade clause until July 16th, thats some weird poop
I think everyone is over-obsessed with what other teams do. There are a lot of different ways to build a winner. There isn't a single formula that needs to be followed. To win the Cup, there are so many things that need to go right, and a lot are out of the team's control. We can sit here and debate who the right coach is, which players are the best, or what lineup tweaks need to be made, but at the end of the day, the difference between the Cup winner and the rest of the league is not as big as most would think.

This franchise hasn’t won anything in 30 years now pretty much. What else are we supposed to do lol

There were plenty of cheaper options on the market than signing a backup for almost 3 mill. Money better well spent other places.
For years the Rangers have had an elite goalie coach in Allaire. Will the team finally hire an elite skating coach to add to Lavy's staff?
I guess my question didn't make the cut......... - TommyGTrain
Good question though. If you remember when Brian Boyle was with the rangers, they had a skating coach. Boyle game certainly turned around with his better skating. Just like Laf needs one.

It's not a bad question. Why does the organization fail to realize that having good skill coaches will lead to what better player developments. Only the Rangers can answer that. I'd love to hear the PR spin there.

If you gave this question before, apologies, missed it. If a different one, please remind me of what it was. Happy to add this one. Covered it last year with the blogs on the hiring and then the resignation of Jessica Campbell. Sure as heck hope they hire someone, same with a good skills coach

Barbara Underhill, who then went to work with the Lightning

Cheaper, yes. Better or on-par? No.
Here's your list of goalies that signed on July 1st through today. Varlamov is better than nearly all of them, save for Sorokin and maybe one or two others that you could make a fair argument on.
