If it was a multi year deal I would get it. But on one year even if he sucks they can cut bait easily - TPC

Nobody, that's also a problem. But a different problem. - tomburton99
That’s why they had to do it. It’s a depth body until a young player is ready. Would’ve loved sprong or rodrigues but not in the cards. If you get 45-50 out of wheeler until a kid is ready it’s better than what they to start last season imo |

yeah the problem is the salary cap should have been higher than it is
you change on the fly with this, because last week you were targeting this topic
you know a few of these Ranger signings were with the belief that the cap would be a lot higher by now
so they need a few 800k signings to get them through this season until hopefully they finally do the right (frank)ing thing with the cap next summer - jimbro83
Who do the rangers have to pay next year? Just Kakko and Schneider? |

Talbot at 1mil. I don't think Halak will get more than 1mil. Granted, he has higher aspirations. But don't think he will get what he wants. - airjan23
is Talbot really that much better than Quick at this point?
this reminds me of kickers in the NFL, all these guys are the same to me

Well one thing is for sure, this rebuild/retool is over. These aged signings have the all in now, we definitely wont be seeing and young blood injected into the line up come September.
Edit:
Just like the old days, aged veterans over youth. |

it's just cheap depth signings, every one of these guys could be easily made to disappear, all of them can be buried in Hartford and the cap hit will be gone

Not changing on the fly. They were not going to get a good player at 800k to fill the scoring needs. Wheeler isn't a good player. Please see charts on previous pages. Both can be true. (1 actually is.) |

you know the salary cap should be higher than it is
and you know the Rangers made three long term signings with the belief that the cap would be higher than it is right now

You see things your way, I see them mine.
I still have a bit of excitement for next season. New coach, new system, hoping to get more from Laf and KK. Miller playing better defensively. More hope though with Lavy getting more from Panarin during the playoffs. |

well yeah, all that stuff is what next season is actually all about
what's annoying is you guys exaggerating the significance of the Wheeler signing

It doesnt matter that the Cap should be higher, it isnt which is the reality of it now. Who the hell saw Covid? Doesnt matter, the Rangers have poor Cap management, thats just the way it is. All those buyouts should have been trades to get something for those players, bad asset management. Of course no one was going to give us picks for those players know we were in Cap hell. |

bottom line, these cheap signings are just stop gaps for one season because of the current cap situation
you guys are exaggerating their significance

Im not against the signing, with our Cap situation, he was most likely the best choice. Its the playoffs where I think he can help. |

Othmann. Stick him in top 6. Laf to RW. Both better options that Wheeler. |

The Signings:
Wheeler, Quick, Nash: Bad.
Bonino, Belzile, Pitlick, Hollowell, Brouillard, Mackey: indifferent.
Gustafsson: Best signing they made on the day. But probably blocks Jones. So who really knows. - tomburton99
So, what were the right moves, Tom?
I try to see your side of these arguments more than most, but I'm at a loss here and finding this particularly petty.
If these moves are all wrong, what was it that Drury was supposed to do? Please tell us. At times, you seem to lose sight of the fact that Drury has to operate in the real world, not a fantasy GM one. You can look at all the charts in the world and have statistical comparisons of every player to lace them up. But, that doesn't sign contracts and build a team. In reality, you don't always get to spurn the lesser candidates to sign all the best players in the world, as if we are the only club looking to improve.
We are rounding out the roster with players who have skill sets different from what was just shown to not work for us, under the restrictions we currently have. And it's being done in a fashion that makes it easy to move on next season if and when we have greater cap flexibility. Whine about past signings or don't, we still end up right where we are. Time to look forward. |
