The PGA Tour got bent over here. There's no question about it, but I also don't think it's a matter of LIV "winning the war" either. LIV needed this merger as much as the PGA Tour did. The PGA Tour was on a path to bankrupting itself with these new "elevated events" with jacked up purses, and needed a huge influx of cash. At the same time, LIV couldn't get TV deals on a network that people would even accidentally tune into, and so that wasn't sustainable either. Their ratings on the CW in the US were absolutely atrocious. According to Alan Shipnuck (whose interview with Phil Mickelson) started this whole thing, LIV stopped reporting them because they were so bad. Sure, this PIF fund could subsidize it, probably for quite a while, but it doesn't make sense to do so. At the end of the day, this is just like the AFL-NFL merger. The AFL was a legitimate force, but at the same time it was never going to overtake the NFL. It simply made sense for both sides merge, keep the AFL teams, just like LIV is going to keep some of their events, and even get rid of some personalities a lot of folks didn't like (Trump in the AFL; Greg Norman is not expected to be involved in the new entity). Meanwhile, the Saudis get the foot in the door they always wanted from Day one.
