Good little read at The Athletic for Canucks' 3C need:

Players that need to be signed by June 1st.

Hopefully Abbotsford can sign someone.

https://www.eliteprospect...yer/472873/sean-tschigerl Believe he will have to pass through the draft again.

More wingers for Abbotsford.

https://www.eliteprospect...ayer/483627/ryan-mccleary
RHD with size, can never have enough. Also will have to pass through draft. Can also go back and play a year as overager next season before coming to AHL. Maybe a player that they wait on for another year.

Well only if the Canucks can add another center or two then. Maybe if someone posted the athletic article in the athletic blog.

Good listen to Shane Malloy from April on Canucks central. Not saying his word is be all end all, it's more about the little tidbits since he has a lot of insider info.

Barry Trotz, on the upcoming draft, says he told his scouts to “take some swings, take some high end swings on some guys”

Then adds: “I can find you 3rd line, 4th line guys, no problem. Go get me some guys that get people out of their seats.”

This has to hurt a couple guys feelings in here knowing even Barry isn't interested in what some deem the most valuable of players in each draft.

Like he had it planned the whole time. Pretty savvy move to get better title and security. Wonder who he makes his GM to take the fall for the rebuild. You know, after they fail to make the playoffs and hand cuff the team to more vet NMC contracts.

See what he is made of then I guess. Only a couple years of their top players left. They have more overpaid 5M wingers than the Canucks do now it seems.

A really old right side D core. Absolutely no prospect pool.

That team really went down hill after Rutherford left and once again Hextall came in like a wrecking ball and just (frank)ed everything up like he did in Philly.

Have Dubas overpay for JTM -> trade some of those picks for younger 2C -> trade rest of picks for RHD(s) -> trade back from 11 to move out cap and pick up later 1st + 2nd rounder -> sign 3C and defense

If you aren't able to at least be able to stick by your D+3 season (even if it's only in a bottom pair/bottom 6 role), generally that's a sign that you aren't good enough to be an NHL regular and moving on should be at the very least be considered. It's one thing if they're being sent down because they're clearly good enough but lack room for playing time but that's not the case here. Hogs and Podz aren't exactly prospects anymore, I'd consider them projects and maybe failed ones at that. I don't seem them as anymore then AHL regs and potential call-ups and there's plenty of those available.
- DariusKnight

Maybe if you’re a top 20 first round pick, but not if you’re a second rounder or beyond. I mean, he’s entering his D+6 season so he needs to push for a roster spot or I think his time may be up.

Funny, Romanov was picked right behind him and he’s already become a good serviceable defenceman, reminds me of all the misses the Canucks have had and the very next player taken turns into a good player.

Go back to 1979 the Canucks picked G-Ken Ellacott 47th OA and Mark Messier was the next pick for the Oilers. Same draft the Canucks took F-Art Rutland 68th OA and the Oilers picked Glen Anderson with the next pick. 1985 the Canucks took G-Troy Gamble 25th OA, two picks later the Flames took Joe Nieuwendyk. 1986 the Canucks took F-Dan Woodley 7th OA, two picks later the NYR took Brian Leetch. 1990 the Canucks take F-Shawn Antoski 18th OA and Keith Tkachuk and Martin Brodeur go next two. 1997 Brad Ference taken at tenth OA, Marian Hossa two picks later. 2007 Patrick White, next pick is David Perron. 2016 Juolevi next pick Tkachuk. 2019 Podkolzin two picks later Matt Boldy……the futility just keeps giving!!

Seems to be a bright, well spoken guy. I like listening to him, he isn't all doom and gloom like some of the Canucks reporters.

I don't know if it was in that clip I posted this morning but from Canucksarmy today about Jett Woo

We didn’t see Woo get off to the best start this season but something clicked around January, and you could make a serious argument that Woo was consistently the best Abbotsford defenceman through the final few months of the season.

The bold, I heard it mentioned somewhere recently, that a lot of D are like that, feel it out a bit and then take off in January. Granted that person was talking about draft eligible kids but I figure it probably applies to more than just them

Crazy Romanov went last season for the 13oa pick.

Granted last years draft was not very good but shows what a young D goes for.

Price for defenders is crazy these days. Woo took a very large step last year, if he can take another step like that.

He's pretty well on the exact same path as Kyle Burroughs. Hopefully Van's development staff can help him get above that level.

The Flyers just signed Adam Ginning last May after four years developing in Sweden, he played last year in Lehigh Valley AHL, should make the big club this year. Similar development path, all be it different leagues.

I’m just thankful the Canucks changed out five amateur scouts last year and have new voices directing them. Hopefully that plays out well.

Still young. A one year "show me" deal suggests he'll have a good season.

Good enough for the NHL is the question?

I would be quite surprised if he made the big club this year.

Provorov
Sanheim
York

in front of him and Nick Seeler played pretty well. Since he doesn't need waivers either. The thing about draft europeans/college vs CHL is that extra 2 years before you need to sign them.

Woo needing waivers next season hurts. He should pass through waivers but as usual it would suck to lose a guy you spent years developing for free.

That's what the development staff is for. I don't know if you listened to what I posted this morning but Malloy said probably 3-5 years is when you will see if the development staff is doing a good job or not. Last year was kind of year 1.

Saw some strides in Woo, Klimovich, D-Petey probably played a bigger role in the SHL than most expected.

Bains as a first year player seemed to improve, maybe little less to do with development staff and just overall player and his own development.

I'd like if the Canucks could get Lane Pederson back from Columbus.

If Kyle Dubas is to hire a GM, one name to keep in mind: Cam Lawrence.

Lawrence is currently hockey analytic consultant for #CBJ. Previously worked for #FlaPanthers. Lives in Pittsburgh, current CFO at @GNCLiveWell.

Also interviewed for GM job during this #pens search.

Probably why it's not a good idea to keep trading draft picks and keep the pipeline full.
