Well we got SOME news.
Donovan Bailey joining the Niko Sparks bid.
And Dubas taking his ball and going home. (pouty mcpout face)

Bad move by Leafs. They may have accellerated the time frame where they begin the next rebuild cycle. Leafs have a good core roster. They need to be really careful If a new GM comes in they start by moving out some of their key players. Team chemistry is a really delicate balance.

I think the opposite.

It’s good that they’ve parted ways. Dubas had 5 seasons with 4 core players (not including Tavares) when he took over. Not many gms get lucky enough to have 4 young players to build around.

He failed..and now the next gm has to deal with the contracts he gave his core players by July 1st

Why not have the Senators bring in Dubas as Pres of Hockey Ops .... oversee what Dorion does. Or maybe go after Pridham for the job.

Agreed. I think people are blinded by his trade deadline acquisitions (which he did well in outside of a few head scratchers) and the fact the team finally got past the 1st round as a reason to extend him.

Let him go the Pens

People learn from their mistakes. Dubas experienced a lot. Tavares was a brutal signing that destroyed the ability of the Leafs to achieve roster balance. They built the team around 2 lines that flourished in the regular season. Over multiple years, they have struggled in the playoffs. due to a lack of depth and goaltending.

There is no way that we can avoid a new ownership group bringing in their own man. It would be irresponsible to do anything different. Adding Dubas (and, perhaps Spezza) into the current Ottawa Senator's management mix could work really well.

I don’t think you could blame him for the Tavares signing. Everyone knew the last few years of that deal would be tough to swallow, but the intention was for the leafs to capitalize in the first 4 seasons of his deal. Didn’t pan out.

I wouldn’t even want Spezza on board..he chose his side already. Whether there was a position available for him at the time for the Sens or not.

Tavares was never worth 11M he never reached 90 points in his career he is overpaid by 2-3M, Mathews was not worth 11.6M when he signed his contract and is not worth it now, asside from his 106 points season he has not reached 90 points in any other seasons, he is also overpaid by 2-3M. that is 4-6M is cap space lost do to overpaid players

Marner is also overpaid but he has 3 90+ points season under his belt so i can be justified a little more (1-2M overpaid here)

add these 3 players overpayments and that is between 5-8M in cap lost do to overpayment that is massive.

MacKinnon is no were near worth 12.6M and i think COL will regret that signing sooner rather than later, the only player who is even remotely close to his salary that is paid 10+ mil is McDavid.

Salaries are getting out of hand again sadly

The goal for any team should be to build a roster where your top 6 players never account for more than 50% of your cap total. The top 6 should include an elite centre, a power forward, a goal scoring forward, an elite #1 Dman, a shut down Dman and a good goaltender.

Sens are working pretty close towards achieving this model. They will likely need to make a choice between Norris and DiBrincat. They will also probably need to decide at some point to move one of Chabot, Chychrun or Sanderson.

Based on current numbers Leafs have $52.5m (62.5% of cap) committed to their top 6 players. It leaves $32m or an average of $2m per player to fill out the remaining 18 spots on your roster. Tough squeeze

Sens are committed to pay their top 6 $39.8m (47% of cap). This number includes Forsburg and Chychrun. Does not include DeBrincat.

I think your point is really important. Those top end salaries in the $10m plus range can be devastating on team depth. Regular season, not so important. But, depth is decisive for teams wanting to make long playoff run.

MacKinnon was woefully underpaid on his last contract, universally accepted as the best team value deal at the time. His presebt deal seems more like a Retroactive payment.

It would be nice for 1 of these public ownership bidders spokespeople . To say we want to bring a stanley cup to ottawa. I hear alot of things but nothing to do with building a champion

Remember the two lead groups have said nothing. The also rans are chattering but, it does not mean anything.

Don't worry about what contenders are saying. Wait till a winner is declared and then we will see what they do.

Too funny. Bruce has named everyone as a likely favourite just before they drop out of the bidding. This is more problematic.

GARRIOCH: "Sources describe Michael Andlauer as 'confident' as Senators' bidding enters final stages"

I believe Andlauer has been the front runner from day 1. I think Bruce may be finally getting around to stating the obvious.

I think Dubas would make a great president for the Sens. The team needs 1 . Dubas is smart and has learnt valuable knowledge. Plus whoever gets him next is going to have a super motivated person to win. Not to mention i think he would join the Sens just to help stick a dagger in the leafs

He's going to want $$$$$$$$$$$

I don't get what we see in Dubas. He hasn't done anything in Toronto that impresses me. He is intillegent and knows how to market himself, but signing Matthews to 5 years (instead of long term), sending Kadri away for Kerfoot and Barrie - then signing Marner to his 11m deal but sending out Patrick Marleau for a HIGH first round pick (Canes took Seth mother flipping Jarvis). There's TONS of hockey execs with more experience and I'm not confident he will be a successful GM anywhere else for the next few years

It would be wise and prudent to examine all options.
I am only advocating for position of president.
Yes those are crucial areas to examine in Dubas's tenure as gm of the Leafs. I am sure if he had a do over, he would not do it the same way. It is hard to use Toronto as the control group to analyze Dubas's performance, since it has been his only NHL job. But cannot be ignored either .
The Leafs pockets are beyond deep. Likely to their detriment. The cap freeze for example. Although it affected all teams . Due to Toronto's excessive deep pockets and thinking they can spend their way to the top. It effected them more then any other team.

New owners will give PD and DJ at least the first quarter of the season before making any moves. I would be nice to have Dubas and/or Coach Q in the back pocket, if needed.

Thank goodness most of you have no say in how the Sens are managed. If you can't recognize what Dubas has done for the Leafs then you are truly not "helpable". All I see are glowing reports from his players on what he has done. Tavares being a bad contract ... really? Sometimes you have to bring in players to play the missing pieces (leadership, etc.). And sometimes those pieces are going to cost. I am certainly not a Leaf fan but I recognize the talent in Dubas. As Team Pres ... absolutely. Then bring in Mellanby as GM. Use Mann and Bowness as VP's. Spezza can work with Dubas as an assistant. Alfredsson .... I don't know where you would put him. He doesn't seem to have much experience in any management position.
As for coach .... I think Andrew Brunette would fit (if you brought in a defensive specialist as assistant), Chris Kelly or Steve Ott could also fit here. Note .... I am not a fan of the retread older coaches. I want newer ideas and modern ways to play.
I think the main reason Dubas left was that he wanted more autonomy (more power) to do what he wanted. This was something Shanahan was not willing to give up. So bring in Dubas and give him some autonomy to work with the GM. A front office that is more player centric and friendly is something Ottawa needs to attract more players/free agents. This city is not a top free agent destination locale. We need to try and change that a bit.

I would like Dubas over Dorion maybe but what has he done?

Major Deals:

Jan 28, 2019: Sean Durzi, 2019 1st (Bjornfot) FOR Jake Muzzin
Jun 22, 2019: Marleau, 2020 1st, 2020 7th FOR 2020 6th
Jul 1, 2019: Brown, Zaitsev FOR Ceci, Harpur, 2020 3rd
Feb 24, 2020: Helped VGK get Lehner while receiving 2020 5th
Oct 7, 2020: 2020 2nd (Kleven) FOR 2nd (Hirvonen) 3rd (Niemela)
Apr 11, 2021: 2021 1st, 2021 4th, 2022 4th FOR Noesen, Foligno
Feb 19, 2022: Nick Ritchie, 2025 2nd FOR Dzingel, Lyubushkin
Mar 20, 2022: 2022 2nd, 2023 2nd, 2024 3rd FOR Giordano
Feb 17, 2023: 2023 1st, 2024 2nd, 2023 3rd FOR O'Rielly

Too many rental deals and I HATED the Marleau deal. That was Seth Jarvis right there. I don't like the core set up. IF the leafs had 1 D-man (instead of Tavares, Marner or Nylander) that could support Rielly, then they would've been ok. But much like the Oilers, Dubas failed to get a top end D-man and/or resign the rentals the Leafs have acquired

NHL regular season point totals and league standings for this year's semi finalists.

Carolina (2),
Las Vegas (5),
Dallas (8),
Florida (17)
note: Calgary (16) had more points than Florida in overall standings..

Good chance Las Vegas (5) and Florida (17) will meet in finals. So, what happened to Boston (1), Toronto (3), New Jersey (4), Edmonton (6) Colorado (7)?

Some top regular season teams failing to make it through to the semi finals may share common structural characteristics. For example, no player listed in the top 10 salary group made it into the semi finals. There are some semi finalists making big salaries (Eichal, Stone, Bobrovsky, Tkachuk and Barkov)...but not top 10.

If you are wondering about the Sens. Stutzle is tops on the Sens but 51st on the NHL list. Brady T is 55, Chabot 58 and Norris is 68. Leafs have 3 skaters (Matthews, Tavares and Marner) earning in the top 10.
