I had a great conversation with Canucks Assistant General Manager Ryan Johnson about the AHL team and some NCAA free agents this morning.

He spoke highly of the work that Arshdeep Bains, Linus Karlsson, Nils Hรถglander, Aidan McDonough and Jeremy Colliton have done this season.

"I give Nils and our coaching staff credit. They've really harped on [Nils] for his defence, puck management, [and his] wall play. That's what's important, not just production."

"If Nils buys into doing these things within a team structure, he will get opportunities to produce and we're seeing that with him now. I give him credit, he's bought into that and working on it and doing video work all the time."

"We knew it wasn't going to be a week to 10 days. These are habits that you have to do consistently for a long time and it just becomes second nature to you. And I think that's what we're starting to see with Nils."

RJ on Bains

"I'll be honest, I didn't think it would happen this quickly. [Bains'] hockey sense is elite of the elite."

"He dominated the Western League and really made it look easy. Then, to be able to come into training camp, come to Abbotsford and basically throw that all out the window. You see a lot of guys come in and say, 'I got this all figured out. I got I know what I'm doing.'"

"But we challenged him in ways. We said 'you're going to find ways to produce but it's going to be through a method that you completely didn't have to do for four years in the Western League'. We said that we're kind of going strip you down and build your back up as a pro."

"From day one, he bought into that challenge and he turned himself into the first unit penalty killer. His puck management has improved, and his pace has improved. He's bought in and it shows you the maturity and we're extremely excited about him."

Also good trade bait to improve in other area's.

Of course, he is one of the only players I like on the team, therefore he must go.

I don't think they have an issue trading it.

I don't believe the CHL has a years thing, NCAA does. Bains played 5 seasons. From my understanding as long as you don't turn 20 before the calendar year that you can come back for your "20 year old" season.

Wouters same thing played 5 full years.

- manvanfan

Those players were free agents, but a quick search and I found this, which states 20 years old.

The CHL NHL Transfer Agreement requires all draft picks under the age of 20 to be loaned back to their major junior club unless they are on the NHL roster or have completed four full junior hockey seasons.

Good news. I know Sutter in Red Deer spoke highly of Bains.

This should be changed to 3 years. or have a clause that allows 1st rounders to play in the AHL.

It gives them the option to go to the AHL at that point in time. It doesn't say that they have too.

Mark Kastelic, drafted by Ottawa in his draft plus 2 season and went back and played another season for Calgary. 5 in total then.

I do think they will spend money this year on a real 3C. I think they will target a RHC that can put up about 15 goals or more that is a two-way player and can win a good percentage of faceoffs.

Fully agree about if you have Dries as a third line man then you are not a very good team.

NHL team gives CHL team 50k for lost revenue. Problem solved. In most cases they still get the guy for their D+1 season and just lose him in their D+2 season.

Dries has 9 goals in 43 games with the Canucks, so about 18 goals over the course of a season, and is a hair under 50% in the dot this year (49.5%). Not as terrible as people think. Since he's cheap, and the Canucks have no real cap room as it stands, I can see him being on the roster next year. Maybe not 3C, but pushing that.

ROR on LTIR. All I know is Leafs gave up a lot for a player with a lot of letters that will do SFA.

I agree about the numbers and the play. He is a decent player that gives the team a good bang for the buck. I do think they are going to upgrade though.

The CHL won't change it. The reasoning behind the rule is so that the league doesn't get watered down.

NHL pays 600K to Sweden and Finland per player I believe.

I know most are disappointed in the direction they have chosen, but I totally understand, although I also don't agree with the direction.
They have chosen to see if they can build around some of the better players that that they have, so all we can do is hope they can fill out the roster with players that can bring the team some success and without selling off draft picks, as that just puts the team into the perpetual status of trying to fill in the age gap
