Cizikas with a hell of a game too. 1st star as far as I’m concerned. He was everywhere. And even though Horvat could have done better on his breakaways, every part of his game is solid.
- potvin05

Horvat missed some opportunities but his faceoffs alone made him indispensable. Cizikas and Fasching were the best Isles tonight. Zeeker was insane in the second period

Yep, definitely. Details like that really separated the two teams tonight.

I’ll give a little love to Romanov too. He’s been much better lately.

The number of Buffalo fans who suddenly can't comprehend the NHL rule on a distinct kicking motion is comical

It wouldn't have shocked me if that went the other way.

Yeah, when I saw it I thought it was 50/50, and probably wouldn't go the Isles' way because of the call on the ice and also because, well, Isles.

Rule 49.2: A goal can not be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net with his skate/foot. .
It's pretty cut and dried. They are typically looking for a distinct follow-through. Fasching merely stuck his leg forward to make the deflection. That was a no-brainer call IMO

I'm not saying it was a bad call. I'm saying I wouldn't be shocked if it didn't go the Isles way. It looked to me like his leg went forward. Plus it was called off on the ice.

Yeah, but I've seen less called a "distinct kicking motion" before. I think the problem with NHL rules is they're not really cut and dried; they're very subjective.

It's not when the whistle blows, it's when the ref intended to blow the whistle. It's not whether it goes off the foot, it has to be a distinct kicking motion. It's not whether the puck goes past the goal line or which player gets to the puck first, it's who the ref thinks will win the race at the dots. The rules are almost designed for controversy

At any rate, Fasching had a hell of a game. Maybe his best as an Islander, and he's had a bunch of good ones.

Fasching was excellent indeed. Casey was all over the ice, and I think his effort level helped to inspire and elevate his line mates' games.

The rule however specifically calls out the 'skate/foot'.

What's your take on Engvall? I didn't get to see the last game (only heard some of it on the radio), and he didn't play much tonight. Wasn't crazy about a few of the flybys in the offensive zone tonight instead of getting physical, but it seemed like everyone was a bit more impressed last game?

OH, and Parise’s tie-up at the end. He’s been great all season. Just kills me. That Milbury (frank) drafting Nillson instead.

Lambert said in the post-game presser, once they got the lead, he wanted guys on the ice that knew the system better. Can’t blame him for that.

Parise may not have as much to give as he once had, but whatever he's got left, he gives it all every game. What a difference from older vets this team used to import like Rolston. Every once in a while out of nowhere, I'll suddenly remember how much I hated that guy as an Islander.

Best value contract in the NHL. I'm fine if he reups for a year, honestly

Way better than two weeks ago. We have an A-plus goalie and a team of veterans. We keep playing this Trotz-esque defense and we have a serious chance. Really want Wild Card 1 though. The Bruins will wipe the floor with us. I think we have a solid chance against anyone else.

I missed most of the last game, too. I only caught some of the 3rd period on my phone.

Tonight I hardly noticed Engvall. I noticed he was -2 as were Lee and Horvat. And I did notice Lee and Horvat working hard out there. I didn't have the best view of tonight's game as my feed was coming from somewhere like Macedonia. So I don't want to draw any conclusions yet about his game, but so far he seemed Baileyesque.
