... and you left out the little part of them not being able to get past the first round because they have no space to address their glaring deficiencies.

Do the Leafs have a pair of number one pick defenseman as part of their core of big money contracts?

The roster construction of the contracts would be quite different between Toronto and Buffalo as it wouldn't be all forwards for Buffalo.

I am not sure what you are missing. The fact that we have great value on the contracts does not mean that you can add unlimited contracts. They don't give you extra cap space for making smart decisions.

The NHL is a hard cap and that isn't changing. I think we can move on.

- Slump Buster

You seem very headstrong on this point. Have you run numbers and used logic to replace certain players with young players on ELC,'s?
If not, you should take the time.
Girgs, Okposso, Anderson, Olofsson, Bishop, Hino, Bjork, Hodgson's buyout...that is $21m right there.
Your worries are pretty unfounded

They’re so cap strapped that they took on Matt Murray’s contract this offseason
- sbroads24

And will most likely make a trade to bring in another contract.

Also Tampa does it, Pittsburgh did it for years.

Let’s be like the good teams.

Tampa built through patience and drafting. They sprinkled in good discount contracts and made smart trades to fill out the back half of their roster. Same with Colorado. Lets be like these teams.

Pittsburgh stunk for years and drafted high and then spent the next 10 years chasing it.

This is absolutely true. They foolishly were top-heavy up front. But you can still only take on some many big contracts - that doesn't change.

(again, I never argued against getting Meier)

block an extension

see his kid

I expected more from you, not your alt of course

So claude's parental advice for his son, too avoid a franchise purposely trying to lose in 2014 , has an agent steering away a client in 2023?

I also expect a bit more, my threshold for your posts is much lower.

Huh? That is not how this works. You can only have x amount of large contracts in a league with a hard cap. That's true for anyone. Having some spare change come off the books next year doesn't change what happens in 3 years.

That's all fine, but we all know why Buffalo isn't a preferred choice for UFAs. That's what we're facing here, trying to get someone to pass on UFA to extend, sight unseen.
- Lunaion

Kinda a one size fits all post.

Individually players have different feelings about buffalo.

If were a good team, schooling and proximity to Ontario always catch players eye. 👀

My perfect world. My path is admittedly geared toward a longer cup contender window and less of a focus to the here and now.

- We make a trade or two to bring in guys with shorter term in the near future. Connor Murphy on D, some other guy on forward. This gives us the shot in the arm right now while maintaining flexibility.
- Get Dahlin, Cozens and Olloffson extended. The latter can NOT get a NMC. Knowing future costs will allow us to wisely spend later.
- Let the kids develop more. I think one of Quinn or Peterka is the next to make the same jump that Cozens made. We will know more about them in a year.
- Have the ability to make big swings in a year or two because the cupboard is still stocked and we have a smart setup with our cap.

You are right, but the Sabres could still have 3 or 4 guys on ELC's then and a couple on first contracts
Well I would say linked up with the talent coming up

They surely will. The question is, will we be doing it because that's how it lined up or because we had to?

Screw getting really good anytime soon - let’s obsess over how much $$ Jack Quinn may or may not get in 2025

The Sabres are good now, they should act like it

I wouldn't give him anything that would hurt his trade value. That's always been the tricky part with him - he is a fantastic complimentary player. Hopefully not more than 5 years x 6 mill.

We all know how it goes historically. With a Swiss player, close to home isn't going to be a card.

It's lined up already with
Levy,
Johnson
Kulich,
Rousek
Rosen,
Savoie,
Ostlund,
Nadeau
2023 1st, and 3 2nds
And several more.

Plenty to roster a fast, exciting Bottom 6, Goalies and Bottom Pairings on ELC's and Bridge deals for 6 years.
All that compliments heavier investments in the top 6 and 1st & 2nd pairings
