Well that's how teams operate so, so should we. This team can afford Timo long term. the question becomes, is that the best way to spend 8M? - TheSabresTaco
The Leafs, Bruins, Devils are also tied to Timo.
Those are very good offensive teams.

.... and they are all cup contenders looking for a rental. Nobody doubts that he is a terrific player.

I don't think that's true. In fact before there was real data on Power, Quinn, sorta Samuelsson and Peterka, along with team additions of UPL, Comrie, Lyubushkin, Jost, Clague and the massive uptick in play from Dahlin, Thompson, Skinner, Tuch and Cozens...
We sucked. - TheSabresTaco
The Sabres started 7-3 and had a goals for percentage of just over 50% which extrapolated over a full season would have been the highest they have had since the last time they made the playoffs.
The 8 game losing streak they were outplaying teams but the team shooting percentage took a dive and the goalies couldn’t make a save (unless you expected the team to shoot below expected forever a mean reversion was bound to happen).

Problem is we give up a ton of goals too. I would rather trade for a Solid D man and shore up my top 4. We are the highest scoring team in the NHL right now without adding anyone to the Offense. - hehateme
Buffalo can do both, without really scratching there pipeline. We really have never been this prepared organizationally wise since before TM to jump into the game and make a couple moves and not hurt the foundation of this team. We don't need 23 trades that dry are caufers out and doesn't Finish the puzzle. 2 trades could really push the Needle for this team right know and it really wouldn't hurt us a bit. Well other than Terry's wallet. |

Our goalies have combined from -7.37 goals saved above average and -0.98 goals saved above expected.
Based on that information alone, our goalies have combined to be about league average in expected saves but have been blasted in actual saves.
Which tells me that we can improve both in goal and on D/team D.
If you remove Comrie, you're in the Black. UPL by himself is still a net negative of -5.94 and -1.18.
What this says, and what the box scores say, is that if you're not scoring a lot, you stink. Which is whatever I guess. A win is a win, but beyond that, I'd rather win 5-3 than 2-1 every day

Of course it has. My point is that you aren't going to outscore good teams while playing mediocre defense. We are not a cup contender this year. - Slump Buster
I agree, Our O is set for a long time. We need to shore up that top 4 D. Could you imagine a top 4 d-corp of
Dahlin, Power, Sammy & Chick-run
with Joker and Whoever as you 5-6...
paired with our O, we could be dangerous for a decade.

I don't do math in sports it makes my head hurt, but I agree I would rather win 5-3 then 2-1.

Sure but you have to pay Chiqorin.
Is Chiqorin not going to command the same salary as Timo?

My question is actually, if you could spend 8M on a PPG offensive player or split that into a D and a F for the top half of the roster, which would you rather do
besides, isn't Timo a rental? |

No, Chiquorin is signed for 2 more years at a very reasonable contract. That's the difference between him and Meier.

I think he becomes a 3 year rental (starting this season) if you trade for him. Paying him market rate at that point could prove a real challenge, if you add a Timo already.

My point is we need a solid D man, WE all ready are the highest scoring team in the NHL and the kids JJ & Quinn are only going to get better.
Shore up the D

He’s still going to command a massive salary at some point so in 2-3 years you are in the same boat.
Either way. Acquire a player to put this team in the playoffs. |

My only gripe is Chicken-man/Chiqorin is not the best at the playing of the defense.
His offensive numbers are no doubt fantastic. |

Because he has great term and plays defense and is young.
You are not getting Chiqorin without one of Kulich/Savoie in the deal.
It’s a first and one of those two. |

what makes you think that Johnson is going to sign in Buffalo? He is literally months away from being a UFA and can sign anywhere.
I think he is as good as gone with Portillo.

Sure, but at that point you've gotten your money (2.5 years) out of him. You don't have to sign him at that point.

Fine with me, both those players have done ZIP in the NHL and Chick-run has 25 pts in 33 gamea and is a +6 on a awful yotes team.
