Obviously the Sabres have (2) 1OA's so their divison of salary would be different then most nhl teams.
I'd say 8% goalie = 7.2 million
28% defenseman = 25.2 million
66% forward = 59.4 million
Just rough numbers, but dahlin at 10 million , sam at 4.5 and power at 6 million (based on dahlins bridge deal)
So were at 20 or 21 with the big 3
I'm not sure I would feel comfortable adding a connor Murphy at 4 or 5 million.
Need to pay guys 5,6 and 7
Just rough #'s. Need those entry level deals almost at every position - Boss34
How much would you spend on 4th line forwards? Bit of a joke, but there's a serious side there too. Bottom 6 wingers currently make more than the top 6. That's not sustainable.

Nice Break down. But what if you have a young team and are only spending 40m on your Forward Positions. This year the Sabres only spent 36m on there forwards and even with Tage's extension kicking in they are at 30m next year. Sabres can afford to supplement money from there forwards Caufer and help there D out for a bit for a few years with the ELC that will be here.

I would not count on Johnson Signing with the Sabres at all. he is so close to UFA status why sign a rookie deal now?
If he wanted to play for the Sabres he could of for the last 4 years. He is not signing in Buffalo... - hehateme
There a number of reasons as to why he may have chosen to not sign before - they are probably irrelevant now. Why sign? Because he fits a position of need for a young and fun team that is just starting to break out. In terms of opportunity I can't imagine the grass being a lot greener in other areas. And unlike Portillo, he really isn't blocked here.

a decent defenseman with a dirt cheap contract.. yeah you aren't getting him for a 4th. - SabresFaninIndiana
I suspect that is what will differentiate him from a guy like Connor Murphy. Any team in the league can fit Schenn into their cap so his value will be higher than maybe it otherwise would be.

So if we use $90m and spread it as
G = $7m
D = $27m
F = $56m
As a rough starting position for a generic group, then perhaps F's would be distributed as
-L1 = $23m
-L2 = $17m
-L3 = $ 9m
-L4 = $ 6m
-13th = $1m
D pairings
-1st = $15m
-2nd = $ 9m
-3rd = $ 3m
G
-Starter = $5m
-Backup = $2m
Obviously, those are very fluid depending on what contracts they have committed to.

At this point and probably a few years out the Sabres won't even be spending close to that on forwards. They can afford to throw a extra 5m or so into there D if they choose. Sh!t they could bring in Timo and still not be there.

It make no sense for Johnson to sign with the Sabres now that he is months away from being a UFA, he will have is pick of teams he can go to.

Big game tonight. Why is it a big game? Because it's the next game. Gonna have to solve Hellebuyck. Daily FO has him as confirmed starter.
We're gonna win that cup Paul. It's not as easy being the #1 as I make it look. Nobody knows Buffalo Sports History better than the 3ER. Well, maybe Schopp.

Absolutely.
The specifics of the Sabres will be radically different from what I outlined for a Generic roster.

I highly doubt he signs here.. - hehateme
If he signs here he plays immediately and he can pretty much assume a spot on a roster next year (if not sooner). He could go to Roch and get a nice long playoff run (hopefully). He would also be part of a very young group. Sure, he could go anywhere and wait until next season to get going.
If memory serves me there were rumors that he had ties to another organization out west.

Oh god. Comrie in the starter's net at morning skate.
Someone post a Nancy Kerigan "Why?" Gif - lacaprup
I am normally the person that jumps on other people for saying "player x better produce right away, or else". But in this case it might be true. If he doesn't come out of the gate crushing it this week they could very well decide to put him on a shelf until next year or if there is an injury.
