We traded Ty Smith for Marino. We replaced Subban with Brendan Smith who has been fine but nothing special.

'Bottom half defense' in what regards? The Devils defensively gave up the 12th fewest scoring chances against and the 5th fewest high danger chances against in the league last season. It's not their fault that their goalie was a literal trash can and couldn't stop a beach ball.

Subban is a perfectly capable 3rd pairing D, but again, when a legit top 4 D becomes available for scraps you take the deal and run. Completely changes the scenario. We're now running out the best right side of a defense in the league with 3 legit top 4 D. If you legitimately think Subban not being in the lineup is the reason the team is doing what it's doing then idk what to tell you.

The moves we made on defense were Subban for Brendan Smith, which is essentially a wash in terms of actual on ice impact, and Ty Smith to Marino which is a somewhat sizeable upgrade. The rest of the defense and the defensive structure/system they're running is literally the same.

I mean that's fine, but if he was paired with Brendan Smith I think people would've seen better results. I dont think some people understand how bad Ty actually was last season. Like borderline histortically bad. And that was PKs most common partner by far. Ty Smith was legitimately a bottom 3 overall defenseman in the league among every single player who stepped onto the ice for one shift. He drug every single one of his partners down with him. Essentially every D on our roster last year had above above a 55% xGF% and CF% without Smith, and were sub 45% with him lol.

That just goes to show how good the overall defense actually was last season lol, combining Smith being awful with all of the injuries suffered and they were still a top half defense in the league. Now upgrading from Smith to Marino arguably gives us the best defense in the league.

Next step for this team outside of trying to acquire a top line/top 6 scoring winger is to get rid of Blackwood either by the deadline or in the offseason and get VV an actual backup/1B. Maybe it's eventually Schmid? But this is too small of a sample though.
