I can understand Calgary’s need to get him locked up and, in the short term, it’s only a light overpay. But man, this kicks in when he turns 30 and I can’t see this being anything but an anchor by year 5 or 6.

I wrote: "PPG player 400+ games into his career and he's entering his prime. Yessir." That shows he's consistently been a PPG player, not just last year. In fact, 4 years in a row he's hit a PPG mark. Probably has a few more of those left in him for the remainder of the contract to get to 700 games at his current career rate or better as he's entering his prime.

Is an elite player, in your estimation, someone who'd make 1 of 4 forward lines on an all-NHL team? What criteria would you use for your selection?

He has the 7th richest contract currently in the league. Do you consider him the 7th best player currently in the league? I would say he is top 15, but 7 is a bit of a stretch. And to be elite, I would say he should be top 5-10.

Mitch is very very good, even great. But I wouldn't put him in the elite class. He is in the top 15, not the top 3-7. Would you build a new team tomorrow around him above 5ish others for the next 3 years?

Short term win for Flames. Win now worry about 8 yrs in 8 yrs. Cap will probably be 95+ by then

I’m a leafs fan and each one of these deals make me grimace about the MM contract. Marner is a good player but they paid hun too much and only got 6 yrs

Except Marner is the better player.

But was he worth 10.9M straight to free agency? No UFA bought?

Not criticizing the player. but the contract...?

No. I can't make a credible argument that I would. Off the top of my head? McDavid, Makar, Nate, Barkov, Kaprizov, Matthews would all get in ahead of him, and I'm sure there are others but it is 530 am where I'm at and I still need my morning throne visit.

If ELITE is top 1%, figure that's 7-8 players (23 man roster x 32 teams x 1%=7-8 players), then Mitchell's probably at 10-15, with strong deference given to his age and prior production.

I don't have a subscription to Evolving Hockey, so I can't check is contract value. Curious on that if we're discussing whether he's worth it.

Fair evaluations, and about the same list I would propose above him. I'd have Draisaitl ahead as well. With Huberdeau, and Gaudreau about on par. The on par level makes it interesting. Kucherov? Stamkos? Pasta? Eichel? Panarin? Barzal? Ect. too many in that next tier that could sway up or down per season. And MM is easily in that tier. Is MM even the 2nd best on his team is another q. Is he more valuable than Tavares?

Your kidding. JT had one season of being more important then marner but as he ages the kid has lapped him in function, the place alone allows Marner to sit comfortably at the 2nd spot on the team.

He's more valuable than Tavares, yes. Age, production, etc. JT is top 50 in the league. He's been a PPG player once in the same 4 years Mitchell has been a PPG player in each of those years.

I'll never understand how the money is worth more than lifting the Cup. Huberdeau will never win a championship there. What a waste of a career

Calgary had to do this. Only way they can have a Top 10 player in the league in their roster. This is not NY or LA. They should try to sign Weegar now.

Tavares is a bum. The LeBron of hockey. I’d rather have Marner any day

Well, he did lead the NHL in points in the second half this season.

Tkachuk will be 32 years old when his contract expires.

Huberdeau comes in at $1M more and will be 38 years old.

Flames should have just embraced a full rebuild, Chicago style. Too late. Purgatory.

Because his career has a shelf life and this is his last, best shot at a big, long term contract with guaranteed money? This is a personal decision, so you wouldn't get it because you don't have the talent the guy has. You will never have to make this kind of decision and neither will I.
