Here's a better one, make your team out of lines and defense pairs that actually played together. Offensive Lines can be separate from the defense team wise.
Example:
Line 1:
Lemieux-Francis-Jagr (Pens)
Stevens-Niedermayer (Devils)
I have to think about it before setting my whole team haha. |

I was in my early to mid twenties when the Legion was formed but have been a hockey and Flyers fan since 1971. I have never seen a line that dominated and played to the strengths of each member more than the Legion of Doom. If they had played today's game with today's rules there is no doubt for me that the Flyers would have added a couple more cups to their history. |

Personally I didn’t watch hockey back in the Gretzky days so honestly best line I’ve seen to date is McDavid Draisaitl and insert name here.
Used to love the Briere Afinogenov line too |

If that’s the bar being set then the West Coast Express line of Naslund, Morrison, and Bertuzzi would be in the hunt with 119 goals and 272 points.
But that’s not what’s being talked about here. - bloatedmosquito
That's a little different than Alfie-Spezza-Heatley. Obviously the glaring hole is Morrison. If you wanna compare that Vancouver line to another similar line it's gotta be Kariya-Rucchin-Selanne. Spezza is clearly a superior center to the other 2 guys. |

You know I was thinking that too! Good call.
Really loved: Lucic-Krejci-Iginla that one time. - glove_was_stuck
Lucic - Krejci - Horton...killer in the post season. |

The '97 Finals would like to have a word with you. The way the Wings defended as a 5-man unit, with active sticks and blocking every lane. Quick retrievals and exits. LOD had no answer for any of that. And the entire league plays like that now.
LOD would also have a hell of a time trying to navigate the modern NZ with LeClair lumbering down the wing and 88 carrying the puck w/ his head down. And getting into the zone would be more difficult since the effectiveness of dump and chase is mitigated by the mobility and puck-skill of defenders these days. And they were never very good defensively as a line, but without the two-line pass, they'd get stretched like crazy.
I'm saying all this as a Flyers fan, btw.
LOD was the best line in their specific era, but they wouldn't be as effective in today's open skating/skill game. |

Lidstrom-Konstantinov
They actually didn't play together that long. But we might not ever see a better d-pairing than that. I would also take Lidstrom-Murphy, Lidstrom-Rafalski, or Lidstrom-Shorthanded over basically any other pair since Bobby Orr. The end. |

Lidstrom-Murphy faced the LOD in the Finals. They were on the ice for ZERO goals against in the entire series. LOD had no answer.

Yeah, it was a galaxy brain move by Bowman to put Lidstrom/Murphy on the LOD instead of big/physical Konstantinov/Fetisov like everybody was expecting.

Maybe not NHL, but consider:
Krutov - Larionov - Makarov
as deployed by coach Tichonov for Red Army & USSR.
Blink twice and you were 3-0 behind after 10 minutes of play. They dominated any opposition for a decade. |

I was too young to have seen them play, but just based on numbers it's hard to argue they aren't in the top five best lines of all time. Bossy, like Lemieux, would have shredded other records if they had healthier careers.

If you want to go back further, when I was a kid, old timers told me the Production line of Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe and Sid Abel and later Alex Delvecchio was as good as it gets. |

Espo Hodge Cashman, different era, but guys like Gretzky would have been kneecapped the way Orr was back then.

defense, shirt grabbing and Brodeur was their game, not scoring.
