This was the exact interview I referred to in the previous forum, and why I said I felt better about Torts as the coach here. Of course I was attacked for that view point by the usual folks. - jd250

That is false. You were not at all attacked for saying you felt better about Tortorella as a coach. |

At the time the Flyers were drafting based on need versus selecting the best player available, and that was a mistake. When it comes to 1st round picks, I always believe you pick the best player available unless you rank two or more players the same, and you draft for organizational need in the later rounds. - jd250
Did they come out and say this?

Question to debate.
Are Lindblom and Laughton both on this team to start the season? Both make 3million. Lindblom has one year until RFA. Laughton has 4 years until UFA. - J35Bacher
would hate it but you should get a return and would not have to add to move them like JVR. Lindblom skillset and to a lesser extent Laughton can be replaced easier than an upper skill player, based upon the farm system.

Only if you promise it’s going to be a full rebuild and not just a retool on the fly… |

Yes they did. They saw the size and the skill package and made a lazy comparison. Say what you want about some of the Flyers drafting, but they really poop the bed in that draft with that 1st pick considering who was still on the board. - MBFlyerfan
Yeah, Morin was a really irresponsible/desperate pick.
Poor kid never had a snowball's chance in hell of filling Pronger's skates, even if he had stayed 100% healthy. Pronger was so much more than just big and mean. No idea how they expected Morin to develop the rest of it. Sigh. |

Morin wasn't even gonna fill a need. He was a total project, years and years away. It was more filling a want than a need. The franchise just couldn't get over losing a Chris Pronger. |

That close out on Duclair in Junior was unbelievable. Kid certainly had some raw skill. Too bad. |

11 years today since the blockbuster trades that sent Mike Richards to LA and Jeff Carter to Columbus. The pieces coming back were Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn, Jakub Voracek and the 8th overall pick (Sean Couturier) in the 2011 draft as well as a 3rd round pick which turned into Nick Cousins.
Schenn turned into Frost and Farabee, Voracek turned into Cam Atkinson. Essentially this is what they have from those trades.

Sens blog:
The Sens have talked to the Philadelphia Flyers going back to the trade deadline about possibly acquiring Travis Konecny. He has three years left at a 5.5 million AAV. Add to the fact that Konecny is a similar player to that of Max Domi, many in NHL circles feel he won't thrive under new head coach John Tortorella. If you recall, Domi had many issues with Tortorella during his days in Columbus, plus the Flyers want to clear cap space in the worst way to try to shape the roster that will suit Tortorella best. - hello it's me 2050
I'm not putting much weight into that statement. But for fun, I'd be interested in seeing what the Sens want for Alex Formenton and Erik Brannstrom. Two players I think the Sens would consider moving. |

Given the players that were still on the board at the time, it was clear the Flyers were drafting for need. |

Yes, I recall Morin being a high riser on draft day but that it was a reach for him at 11. |

I really like both players but both should be moved to create roster and cap space. - MJL
And I presume JVR should be moved as well to create space? If so, what do you do with the cap space? Do you use it this off season and sign a FA, or do you wait until next off season? Having cap space for the sake of having cap space is not a plan. Cap space only matters if you use it. |

Yotes, Seattle would have to take on JVR, they need to stay away from adding assets, move other pieces that their system can replace and move JVR at TDL

Sit on it and maybe use it at the deadline or whenever to facilitate a deal to get a young player or 1st rd pick. Take on a very short term deal to help another team out. Or fill in the gaps on 1 year deals if the players in house cant cut it.
Cap space matters period. You do not have to use it right away. Where this team is at you wait until the right opportunity. Now this will not happen as he will spend it asap.

As far as I know, they've always said they were taking the BPA. Maybe they just didn't rank them well. If I remember correctly, Homer made them review that draft list in an effort to get Morin higher on the chart. |

Wow, almost 9:30 in the morning and no one has whined about the Flyers needing to do a total rebuild yet. Congrats! Looks like the season ends tonight and then the silly season will begin. I just think the Bolts are losing the battle of attrition which frequently happens in the playoffs. Too many guys playing banged up. It's ova! Kudos to Sakic for adding depth to compliment their stars(something the Oilers have never been able to do). Chucky gonna have to think outside the box this summer and I don't think he has that ability. Next! |

cap space can be used well at the deadline, teams want to upgrade and unload salary heavy expiring contracts

They are not the only teams that could take him on.
