Paying a 4th liner 1M more is far worse than paying Marner 1M more...and yes its subjective on how much both are overpaid.
Like Zezel said, the exaggeration of Marner's contract is what is "dumb"
Its in the spotlight because of the season he is having...but so was Nylander a few seasons ago.
The point here is elite talent can play up to their contracts, 4th liners who offer dead cap don't.

Marner's contract is easily 2M more than it should be. The Leafs wagon is hitched to this immoveable (because Dubas has intimated that he is irrevocably part of the Core 4) object unlike the unfortunate 4th liner who is earning 1M too much. You assert that Marner can live up to his contract but he has yet to do so and I could make the argument that he does not improve.
I'm not especially concerned that Ritchie's contract - it was a 2-year gamble that didn't pay off and we may need to unload a pick to get rid of it. Oh well. Dubas rolled the dice and now has 1.5 years more of Ritchie to contemplate or find the least painful way out of it. The contract is "dumb" and unfortunate.
Marner's contract is "dumb" because we're not seeing the value of his contract expressed in actual production or, more rightly, results. The return on investment is dumb and that's not an exaggeration.
Lastly, this conversation wasn't originally about whose contract is (frank)ing dumber. If you want to say Ritchie's contract is dumber, sure, fine. That still doesn't invalidate the dumb contract Dubas handed out to Marner.
But hey, maaaaaybe Marner lives up to it. You can come back to this thread when he does so and and give me a colossal "I told you so" when he does.
