I am engaging in conversation

I am just not putting any energy into worrying about the contract because he is a young elite star that can still live up to it

I'll worry about the Nick Ritchie contracts because like I said, you have to use a pick to get rid of those

- Santo_44

I can assure you that I'm not "worried" about any of these contracts. I have zero control over the outcome of any of it.

You can be concerned about how Dubas gets out of the Ritchie pickle but me complaining about Marner's is not a mutually exclusive arrangement. I can complain about them both -- I even conceded that Ritchie's contract was "dumb" and I'm happy to complain about it too.

Having said that, I find the Ritchie narrative to be a bit of whataboutism here. My original point was about Marner... but whatabout Ritchie!!!! Sure, Ritchie sucks. What does that have to do with my Marner criticism?

Paying a 4th liner 1M more is far worse than paying Marner 1M more...and yes its subjective on how much both are overpaid.

Like Zezel said, the exaggeration of Marner's contract is what is "dumb"

Its in the spotlight because of the season he is having...but so was Nylander a few seasons ago.

The point here is elite talent can play up to their contracts, 4th liners who offer dead cap don't.

You are saying Guhle and Schneider being top 4 Ds and Amirov a 3rd line winger like its a fact and I just don't understand that.

Just because a player is in the NHL honest mean squat. KK was in the NHL as a Hab and look at him now. Dermott played at a very young age and he is a 3rd pairing guy at 25.

The scouting reports disagree with you, and unless you have done your homework I really can't put much faith into this opinion.

Amirov is a top end prospect, he has 1st line potential and a high hockey IQ. The Leafs have Lil, Sandin and Niemila. Had Sandin and Liljegren in the top 3 for the last 3 years. You have to balance out your pool.

If you want the reports ill send them to you.

Amirov's development has, unfortunately. been cruelly cut down by injuries this year. I fully expect him to marinate in the KHL again next year -- he's playing with his hometown team in the KHL (and I think a fairly local team in the VHL) so it's probably a pretty good situation for him.

Having said that, I can definitely see him being a nice trade chip the Leafs might decide to deal this season.

I'd rather keep Amirov over Robertson but that is just me.

Marner's contract is easily 2M more than it should be. The Leafs wagon is hitched to this immoveable (because Dubas has intimated that he is irrevocably part of the Core 4) object unlike the unfortunate 4th liner who is earning 1M too much. You assert that Marner can live up to his contract but he has yet to do so and I could make the argument that he does not improve.

I'm not especially concerned that Ritchie's contract - it was a 2-year gamble that didn't pay off and we may need to unload a pick to get rid of it. Oh well. Dubas rolled the dice and now has 1.5 years more of Ritchie to contemplate or find the least painful way out of it. The contract is "dumb" and unfortunate.

Marner's contract is "dumb" because we're not seeing the value of his contract expressed in actual production or, more rightly, results. The return on investment is dumb and that's not an exaggeration.

Lastly, this conversation wasn't originally about whose contract is (frank)ing dumber. If you want to say Ritchie's contract is dumber, sure, fine. That still doesn't invalidate the dumb contract Dubas handed out to Marner.

But hey, maaaaaybe Marner lives up to it. You can come back to this thread when he does so and and give me a colossal "I told you so" when he does.

Agreed. I think it's unlikely Robertson translates into a Top 6 forward on this team. Amirov's game is more complete and I think his potential is likely higher.

But... the Leafs may deal him to improve the team "now". Hope they find a way to keep him but I'm not holding my breath that they do.
