People are right to point out the Habs could have drafted Girard and the cat either way and they're right to point out that there's no guarantee the Habs use those picks on those guys.

Still, it wasn't a great trade

- Takemedrunkimhome

Didn't he get some picks back when he traded him back and one of those picks turned out to be Romanov?

Also add Mediatic poop show...

ya, it willl be Darche I guess

I'm fully expecting him to be named GM as well. Wouldn't be my pick but we'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

EDIT: Just replacing Timmins and possibly some scouts should help.

As far as I can tell, their only pick at that point was 9th overall (Sergachev) and they traded away the needed picks in that trade needed to draft them. Anyway it's a fair point Timmins would have likely pissed away those picks, but I thought the whole point of a worst trade is with the benefit of hindsight.

Trading an early and a mid 2nd round pick in a good draft year for 2 late second round picks in a less good drafting year isn't equivalent...

I don't know enough about the other candidates. From what I hear, Martin Madden seems like a good pick.

I'm not sure it really matters for right now. They should be picking the guy out of the pack they feel could be the best GM in 2-3 years time, and slowly transition responsibility.

Gorton is gonna be running the show for the next few years anyways.

that will probably be the first question Molson will get. is Gorton there only for the transition or does he have a long term contract?

I think everyone understands that he's not GM only because he doesn't speak French.

true, but to think the next GM will only be a puppet and that Gorton will call the shots... sorry I don't buy that one. look around the league, teams with a President of hockey ops. their gm run the show. sure it's a team work, but at the end of the day it's the gm who has the final word.

Romanov was drafted with the pick included with Phil Danault when we gave them Fleichsmann and Weise.

I think he will be here for the long-term.

If I had to guess, they are going for a Toronto/Shanahan type model, where Gorton is in charge of everything until the plan is in place and moving, then slowly slides onto the background.

That plan, which will surly see a greater focus on drafting and development, will be interesting to hear about... Are they gonna rip this team down and build it back up, or just tool around like they have done for the last 30 years and hope something magical happens.

I respectfully disagree with the statement he "built" the team. Bergevin's never built the team and that was what resulted in the team falling apart. He brought left wingers to play center, he drafted multitudes of left defensemen in the last few years but hardly a right, he brought in payers to fill positions regardless of if their style of play fit with what they needed. He failed time and time again to re-sign key players. He brought rookies into the fold but they never got played instead brought in "depth players". He "built" a big, strong slow defensive unit for a fast paced NHL. That big unit never meshed with the quicker group of forwards and the system only worked in the playoffs because the forwards came back. and what about the forwards size, i'm not judging their talent but you have to have more than one big forward. Even the ones that are at the 6 ft mark aren't very strong on the puck and certainly no bruisers. Building a team is about drafting for the future not your current needs which happened far too many times.

one way or the other, important players will have to go. if they just make a few big trades to get a C and a D, players will leave. I don't care much which way they go, or who's the next gm. I'm just happy Timmins is gone.
and hope the next gm has a vision. and not one from the 80'.

One of my biggest criticism of MB is that he got so involved in his players / management team, that he could not step back and make the proper and hard decisions that needed to be made at times.

I appreciate his loyalty and all-in passion for the Habs, but that killed his ability to build the team properly.

Gorton has no attachments to anyone in the organization - on and off the ice - so I am excited to see how he assess the organization.

Will be a refreshing change.

If they can only stop drafting for current needs and take BPA it'll be a huge improvement.

Yeah that's what I've been arguing... My post was pointing out after the Shaw trade we didn't have the picks to draft Girard or Debrincat.
