Karine Hains: Cleaner House Last night, when it was announced that the Habs had received permission to speak with Jeff Gorton and that Scott Mellanby had resigned from his post with the Canadiens, it felt like some wheels had been set in motions and it carried on throughout the day.

Nice blog Karine. One spot I disagree, with the information we have today, I think Shaw for the 2 2nds that turned into Debrincat and Girard has to be the worst trade made. What the logic was behind that move I'll never know. At least Drouin was trending up before his injury and it's not like Sergachev is playing like Erik Karlsson in his prime (he is good, but not spectacular).

A fair and balanced assessment of Bergevin thank you.

Losing MB is a mistake as he is one of the best GMs in the league, is bilingual and was a player himself. He has assembled an excellent group of young players, managed to maintain some cap space and made the Cup finals last year.

How do the Habs replace him? Good luck.

My 2 cents on today's events

TIMMINS
For me, the biggest plus is getting rid of Timmins.

We desperately need to bring in some new blood (and philosophy) in this department, this means getting people who know how to recognize talent and potential/character ... but most importantly, emphasis should be put towards DEVELOPMENT of skills for roles that players will be asked to perform in the NHL.

A systemic approach is needed here ... plan ahead so when you need a player to perform a specific role in the NHL you already have one waiting in Laval.

Start by fixing what's wrong in Laval and adjust from there ... this should be MISSION #1 for the new GM.

In the past (winning years), the Habs did well because they knew how to plan ahead and develop accordingly. Success is not achieved overnight, it takes careful planning.

BERGEVIN
As for Bergy, he did some good moves and some boneheaded ones too.
But one thing we can't fault him for is being too timid, he genuinely tried to make the team better.

Unfortunately, the team's poor performance at the draft table (and especially in the development phase) forced him to have to do some questionnable trades in order to fill holes in the lineup. Panic management never ends well.

However ... he's also the guy who failed to recognize his team's development system failures and chose to let Timmins in charge of that department.
This failure probably cost him his job today.

now there you have a good point. look at Tréveur 2nd round picks in the last 13 years.
best one? Lekhonen. in 13 years, going back to Subban in 2007.

So now we probably have a Dubas clone to look forward to. I hear Darche's name being thrown around amongst other francophones. Being a GM in Montreal presents it's own maladies. This is not a job for the faint of heart. Rearranging the deck chairs initially comes to mind. We should have have picked Brady over Kotkaniemi. We all knew it then (except Timmins) as we all do now. Woooossshhhh!!! Swung on and missed.

I meant with the benefit of hindsight, but the sad part is you're completely right, they more than likely would have blown those picks. Hopefully Timmins replacement is at least half competent.

One of the best GMs in the league should be able to see mediocre at best (I think that's generous) scouting, drafting, and player development and fix the (frank)ing problem. You can't call him best in the league when he has failed with his scouting chump buddy at the most important role as a GM.

For me biggest flaw of Bergevin was falling in love with some of his team players or colleagues (Timmins for example…)and this was altering his judgement…

True that he did very good trades but very often to repair his own mistakes…

Finally his « all glamorous » personality is somehow a big reflection of the way he was doing his dealings…

Nobody is perfect but when you look at the best GMs (past and current), all of them are individuals who are very pragmatic and objective…. Bergevin was not made of same wood even if he really knows his hockey…

Will see what next one will build…

You forgot Romanov, but I agree Timmins was probably the single biggest anchor of the Habs for 18 (frank)ing years.

Will depend on the GM and development guy, not the head of amateur scouting.

One of the reasons that made the drafting look weaker than it was has been the tendency of Bergevin to try and recreate the Byron success by signing cheap d-man and depth forwards in the hope one of them would reach a new level suddenly instead of giving time to rookies to follow their development curve. Would the Canadiens have been that much worse in 2017-2018 with Lernout playing instead of Joe Morrow, David Schlemko and Jakub Jerabek? Daniel Audette or Jérémy Grégoire (or McCarron) over Byron Froese? Nope, but Bergevin hoped that Morrow would suddenly become a top 4, and Byron Froese a 30 points player, instead of living with a rookie performing at 80% those guys' actual skill level for a year and improving over that time to grow into a 110-120% version of those guys.

I have said and will keep saying it, one of the reasons the Canadiens look like they can't draft is that they can't let their youngsters play. Drafting can certainly be criticized, but it could certainly have looked better with more opportunities and less ''the seach for the next Paul Byron/Jeff Petry"

Shaw wasn’t a bad deal at first, he brought grit and character to the team, it became a bad deal when all the concussions rendered him an ineffective player but Bergvin couldn’t have known that at first. Besides, with the use the Habs made of draft pics they probably got much more out of Andrew Shaw than they would have from those 2 picks as sad as it is to admit. I’ll admit that he did give him too much of a big contract though.

Yes, 24 cups but it’s been a long time since they’ve been good for a 5-7 year run. Those days are decades ago. Those years are well back in the rear view mirror.

Drafting, developing or both have been bad since 2008 and Danny Kristo.

Come on, you know they wouldn’t let him keep it. Team would explain to him he cannot comment on Twitter, that this is a real job, not like the United States President for example
