What I’d do, FWIW

Break them down into 4 groups of 6 teams each:

Washington, Philly, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Islanders, Columbus

Boston, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Florida, Rangers, Montreal

St. Louis, Colorado, Dallas, Nashville, Minnesota, Chicago

Vegas, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Arizona

Play a round robin within each group. The results of those games to be added to the regular season standings. Rank each group by points percentage. The top 2 teams in each group get a bye while 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5 in a one game showdown to make the playoffs.

The teams that don’t make the final 16 get the 8-15 spots in the draft. A lottery with the other 7 teams is done for picks 1-7 with Detroit guaranteed to pick no lower than 4.

The rest of the playoffs proceed as follows:

Two best of 5 rounds to reduce each “division” from 4 teams to 1. Best of 7 conference finals followed by best of 7 SCF

It’s not perfect but it’s the best they can do. Also, the draft needs to be after the Cup is awarded.

I don’t hate it. All I care about is the results of who and how gets into the playoffs the same as if nothing happened at all. Plus, there has to be a real warm up before playoffs. We can’t go right into playoffs. So I like what I see here.

If you trade Ghost and TK (package them?) you now have $10M more in cap space going forward. Literally EVERY player who has been on wing with Coots and Hayes have been great. Grant is more valuable to the team than TK. TK is the current Ghost. He looks better than he really is, so if you use him as a way to unload Ghost, its well worth it.

I think that would open the door for one too many debatables. If retiring a number is a debate it should immediately be a no. The next number retired I would think will be Giroux.
- ClaudeFather

Briere's number should not be retired. Don't know if Giroux's will be either. Needs to make the HOF to get his number retired.

That might be the case of all retired numbers so far but I’m confident 28 is retired, HOF or not. Or is that an actual requirement in writing ?

He's always going to have these "good days, bad days" that Bill has eluded to in previous articles.

My honest opinion he won't play again. Hope I'm wrong.

- Pelle31Forever

He is only 22 with a healthy body. Who has played hockey throughout his life.

We are WAY WAY WAY too early in his life to start thinking about him never playing again. I think they are being cautious. Probably to a fault. He had been practicing with the team for a while.

The team is most likely (and rightly) taking an overabundance of precaution with their prized #2 overall pick. It will be well worth it when he is ready to play next season or even the season after.

I'm confident that unless he makes the HOF, his number will not be retired.

As a huge fan of Briere, even I don't think his number will be retired. I think he'll make it to the Flyers HOF though for his playoff heroics.

If Giroux finishes with over 1,000 points as a Flyers (which is certainly possible), I don't see any way that his number is not retired. He's already 2nd in assists, 4th in points, and third in games played in Flyers history. There's a strong chance that before his career as a Flyers is over, he'll be 2nd in most major statistical categories behind Clarke

I think barring some kind of major injury, he will most certainly score 1,000 points as a Flyer. Those numbers will put him in the Flyers hall of fame. He needs to make the Hockey HOF to have his number retired.

Brian Propp is 2nd all time in goals scored. 3rd all time in assists and 4th all time in games played. 3rd all time in PP goals. 2nd all time in GW goals. His number is not and will not be retired by the Flyers.
