edit, if they succeeded in doing that, they would also have to pay him that $ to play in the AHL. that money is peanuts to NHL teams but would be way more than most AHL players make (excluding buried contracts). Some teams could easily do it, others not so much.

Leivo is probably viewed as expendable.

His 2 year contract may provide an insurance policy for the expansion draft that the Leafs will have exposable assets if they manage to clear out the undesirable contracts (*cough* Lupul *cough*) before the expansion draft. With guys like Michalek, Greening, etc. on expiring contracts, they won't qualify for the expansion draft.

When people think about some of the Marlies guys like Leivo, Hyman, Brown, Sosh, they instinctively think "rookie" and lump them in with Marner, Matthews, Nylander and come to the conclusion that "there's no way Babcock starts the season with 7(!!!!!) rookies"

But these guys are all 22-24, have had minimum of 2 years playing against grown men in professional leagues (except Hyman who has 1, but is also the elder statesman of the bunch and played a ton of college hockey). They aren't just some kids fresh off the draft coming in here.

Would not at all surprise me to see these guys become mainstay depth when the likes of Laich, Michalek, Greening, etc are shipped out for picks.
