What trick was that? Every team can go over the cap at the TDL if injuries occur. What Arizona did to get to the cap floor was just a joke, and everyone knows it. Pronger will never step on an ice sheet again in his life. He should not be allowed to be traded. - powerenforcer
Every team can do what Arizona did.
It's a "joke" that a team can replace injured players and then have them stay on the play-off roster when the injured player returns.
I'm not demeaning the Hawks' Cup win - they did it legitimately and within the rules - but the rules seem a little stupid to me sometimes. |

How was that a trick?
Kane was legitimately hurt and replacing his cap hit is well within the rules. The timing happened to work out perfectly, but it was legitimate. Comparing it to trading salaries of retired(injured) players is silly. - darkman
Not silly - both are within the rules - both lead to results that subvert the cap.
Accept one, have to accept the other (until one or both rules are changed). |

It's Wednesday today, so do you suspect that we don't get two deals done with sharp/bickell/versteeg Crawford will be dealt by tonight? - Panarin27
I expect, personally, that no deals happen this week. Just a feeling to me. |

Why it bothers me (and should bother everyone) is it is a circumventing the cap 180 degrees differently than when teams signed players to those long contracts. If teams are punished for tricks one way, they should be punished for tricks the other way. Plus, why wouldn't Bettman want Arizona to be a competetive team? - powerenforcer
This will make you happy - Chris Pronger is now in the Hockey Hall of Fame and he is on Arizona's roster counting against their cap until they put him on LTIR again in October. |

Better yet, he is being paid by the Coyotes while also being paid by the league to work in the Department of Player Safety.

Can the Hawks just do what LA did and plant some Oxy on Bickell and alert the authorities? Boom! $4m savings |

Toronto opened up cap space by trading Clarkson for Horton. There are all kinds of cap circumventions for all teams. |

If Bowman can't move Sharp or Bickell, someone's cap hit(s) will have to go. - EKolb13
This would be a colossal failure by Stan. You move Sharp and/or Bickell for less than they're worth before you move Seabrook. |

One is a replacement for an injured player. How is that circumventing the cap?
Perhaps you need to refresh your memory on the meaning of the word:
Circumvent to avoid being stopped by (something, such as a law or rule) : to get around (something) in a clever and sometimes dishonest way
Fits the Pronger and Savard deals much better wouldn't you say?
As you say, they're both allowed, but one is legit and one really is not. I expect the NHL to close that loophole eventually.

Florida just acquired Marc Savard last week. $500K in actual salary and $4M cap hit.

Ive thrown this conspiracy around in my head a few times... Don't believe it for a second, but considering how well it worked, I wouldn't be surprised to see a team actually plot this out... |

You don't find it coincidental that Hawks went out and traded high draft picks for rental players when it appeared Kane was out until the second round then suddenly he was available for the first game of the playoffs along side those reinforcements they would not have been able to get under the cap? |

Why not just be happy that what is happening with Pronger proves that the Hawks will be able to avoid any re-capture penalty if Hossa decides to retire before his contract is up? |

Not sure why everyone is getting their shorts in a knot? Every team has an opportunity to make a circumvention of the cap work for them. |

That's right
Know the rules
Play by the rules
And if you can use the rules to your advantage then you do
He's played a total of 2 NHL games, Nurse isn't a top pair dman in the NHL and he may or may never be. I think he has a great future but I also thought Cam Barker did before he actually stepped on NHL ice. Each step from Junior to the AHL to the NHL are huge and many can't miss prospects do in fact miss. Let's not write up Nurse's HOF ticket for a few more years. - EnzoD
HYPERBOLE and finality. 2 of Paulr's calling cards on this blog. Did I say he was a HOF or even an All-Star? No, I did not.
Darnell Nurse is 20years old and SHOULD be Edmonton's #1 Defenseman, maybe as soon as this year. As Sandus said, when you have a 30 year old defenseman that might not be within the Salary Cap structure, a return like Darnell Nurse is really just a fantasy. Edmonton probably wouldnt even trade Nurse for Seabrook straight up.
