we do need some prospects in net. not happening with the top pick.
- hammarby31

I wouldn't be happy if it did.

I would like to see them either draft a winger or trade the pick for a winger.

I wonder if the Hawks has a compliance buy out left. Flyers could deal VLC and a pick to the hawks for Sharp then the Hawks can buy out VLC.

Bettman is thinking of adopting the badger into the coal fire thing, but they may try it at the AHL level first. No word on the san scythe idea.

I would pay money to see that. And not because I hate badgers.

At least from outside looking in, it tells me the team is committed to developing its young players, and they wanted a guy who could guide them along.

Maybe not having pro experience is a terrible thing, but its still hockey.

I suppose. I don't know anything about this guy. I'm reading he never got over the hump at the college level despite coaching a ton of talented players like Parise, Toews, Zajac etc. I don't know, I see both sides of the argument. I definitely wasn't in favor of some of the retreads out there, but I thought there was a large enough pool out there with good NHL resumes to choose from. Obviously the only way to evaluate this hire is to see how things play out on the ice. This is about the furthest off the radar hire that there can be. Is that a good thing? Time will tell.

I think it may have been a factor. But more of one where Hextall was able to ask his son his personal opinion of him, something that most scouts/players can't do. But I don't think he hired him just because his son played for him.
- jmatchett383

agreed and i was thinking possibly hexy getting to know the guy a little (probably had a little more 'access' than other parents!) over the years and knowing more about him than other candidates

I gotta admit, when I read the name I was expecting it the article to be from The Onion.

I honestly had never heard his name up until I heard his name.

The only thing that would have made this signing better was if his name was Ronn.

I had heard the name before, ND has a really great college hockey program. Steep in tradition. I watch a fair amount of college hockey.

Pierre always references the great "Dean Blais" that was the ND coach before Hakstol.

What's your gut on this hire Hammar? Granted I'm just having some fun, but I would have preferred a guy with NHL experience.

Nope. I just said in the other blog I would have been ok with Babcock, Dineen, Boucher, Deboer.

Peter DeBoer has won 44.7% of the games he's coached spanning seven years. Why is he a big name coaching hire?

I don't want to sound like I'm bashing the signing because I really don't know anything about Dave Hakstol. I also believe there is no way to judge what he's able to do without seeing the final result.

With this said, is there anything truth that he Coached Brett Hextall? If this is the case, what's next? Brett Hextall was signed at the last minute before training camp and probably got a long look in preseason than he deserved. Could this mean Brett Hextall is going to get a real chance to become the first call up in an injury situation?

I suppose the point I'm trying to make is, we can give Hextall a pass by making something up like "I'm so proud that he's doing things his own way", when his higher could be based on how Dave Hakstol once waited after Ron at an Applebee's. I just don't want Ron Hextall to higher people because of sentimental connections or trying to prove he's the smartest man in the room.

I saw Deboer get a team to the NHL finals in which his best defenseman was Bryce Salvador. Something to be said for that.

Because he coached in the CHL, where they apparently play "real hockey".
