At this point, given the stated direction of the team, and the record that Hakstol has built at UND, I'm very encouraged by the hire.
The guy has a great track record of developing and wining at the same time. Granted it's at a lower level, but his work has been outstanding in it's consistency and success rate.
It's a bold, outside the box move for sure, but Hakstol seems to be a smart and highly motivated guy, who has some great ideas. - Jsaquella
that fact that his name is hakstol just kills me. |

Please..This is the Flyers Hockeybuzz forum.
Hexy could have hired Bowman and Babcock and the same people would be complaining.
Im interested in seeing how a new coach who has developed multiple NHL quality players takes a young and hopefully getting younger group into the next few years. - opeth_pa
I'm actually asking...who has Dave Hakstol developed? |

So, I've just gotten home from work and I'm dead tired and more than a little discouraged with the general path of the mass of humanity that I come into contact with on a daily basis. What I need to know is... are the first 30 pages worth backreading, and if not, would someone please give me the ADHD tl;dr version? |

Seems negative. I'm cautiously optimistic - aflyerpower8

The backread is exactly what you would expect, given that they hired someone 99 percent of us hadn't heard of. All of the posters you would expect to see are here, and you can kinda guess where they are on it |

Initially shocked I think? Questions regarding if he was the right guy with no NHL experience under his belt but slight cautious optimism poking through the blouse. |

He's got a wife. I think it may be frowned upon if I was to try and find photos of his kids. |

If that's what you took from anything I've said, that wasn't my intention. I would have prefered a more experienced NHL Coach. I'm not at all saying it was a bad higher. I don't even know the guy. - SuperSchennBros
No, I don't think you have intimated that, nor did I take that from what you posted. I think there have been some reasonable concerns made.
Here is a concern I have. How will handle the bench, and the room. How will he adjust from coaching college players, to handling pro hockey players who are millionaires, and have egos, etc? That's a concern I have. He'll now have to deal with a lot of other issues that probably aren't present in college hockey.
I think the connection of Hextall's son playing there, probably enabled Hextall to observe and get to know this guy a little bit. I don't think this is an off the cuff, impulsive hire by Hextall.

i don't know that. maybe of all the experienced, qualified current/former nhl coaches out there, none of them are a fit her for certain reasons including that they don't want to be here. i mean, mabye dave tippet hates the flyers after his stint as a player in the early 90s?
do you really want boucher or nolan or some other guy? just because he's a known quantity so to speak?
babcock only one 1 cup - and that's including his time with the ducks. fonzi won a (frank)ing cup. you want that guy?
i'm intrigued by this move. again, it's not as if they're poised to make a run next year anyway. - hammarby31
I'm fine with the decision Hakst...I mean Hextall made. A good young coach with a fresh perspective, to grow with a young nucleus that Ron is putting in place.
And it gives us a better chance to snag Jakob Chychrun next year. |

I will be fairly stunned if Terry Murray isn't at the NHL level in some capacity to help him, whether it's on the bench or eye-in-the-sky |

My first thought upon hearing of the hire was; They just did the least Flyers-like thing they could possibly do. They've been doing it the "Flyers Way" for decades with ultimate success always eluding them. I don't have a problem with it. I've seen North Dakota play once in person (frozen four at WFC) in the last two years and twice on television. I was very impressed with the group of freshmen and sophomores who lost in the Frozen Four in '14.
Also I'm on record as having said that I would completely lose my poop if Coach Tortellini or Bylsma were the next Flyers coach. For those who are concerned, I know exactly where my poop is and it has not been lost.

At first site, I think it's tough not to criticize because Hakstol Coached Hextall's Son. For the most part, I think you have named all the concerns we should all have. |

Why don't you tell me why you are so high on him? You sound exactly the same on the other end of the spectrum. What is it, exactly, from his Wikipedia page you saw that says man he is going to be the first NCAA coach to make it. To buck a trend of decisions not to take NCAA coaches since 1982. Hell, I'd rather of had Mark Johnson and he coaches Women hockey. - Flyers1218
I am neither high nor down on him because I have no idea who he is and know nothing about him. You have such a strong opinion you must know a lot about him. Otherwise you don't what the (frank) you are talking about.

HA! Glad to hear that
There's no way I'm going to be critical of a hire of a guy whose teams I can't recall ever see play -- until I see how he runs a bench, especially when things aren't going well, I just can't form an opinion, positive or negative
I sincerely hope he can develop young players. That's what they have to have right now

As a favor to hex son it will qualify look it up - Landsbergfan
If you legitimately think Hextall would choose a coach as a favor to his son, you think absolutely nothing of his professionalism or will to succeed. |
