What a great big fat lie. Hextall must think fans are stupid!! This guy has a wealth of Head coaching experience. Ooh, ooh, then what does Babcock have? This is BS in the highest degree and what I see as a Ruben Amaro like move. Hextall who also must have a wealth of GM knowledge has screwed up this organization and has taken it back to the stone age. This a sure fire way to get fired and the organization will have to start over again, and again, and again. Until someone (Ed) hires the best people in hockey, period. This is a farce and to me a power move so the GM can be the big boss. Smart people hire smarter people around them to be successful not rookies. This will cost the Flyers five years to get out of this jam, - Joe Vegas
You sound like you know a lot about this new coach. I would like you to impart some of this knowledge on the rest of us.

FWIW I told my coworker, who used to be a hockey coach, the flyers hired hakstol and his eyes lit up. He said he's a really good coach and would be great for us. |

Damn. I am sure there is going to be a bit of fun had with this hire. At the end of the day, would have been cool if they had someone with NHL experience but off the board isn't a terrible thing.
In a hockey market like Philadelphia, Hextall just put his own head out there with a hire like this imo. Hopefully the guy does well, but the crows will be circling very quickly if he doesn't. |

Does these mean since Babcock has a wealth of experience that no one else can? He never said that he had a wealth of NHL head coaching experience. You are assuming this guy isn't smart and can't be successful as a NHL coach, where are you getting this from? Do you have some info that Hextall doesn't like a crystal ball that allows you to see into the future? I'll take that five year bet, not because I think Hakstol will be a good coach, but really five years. - LJF

didn't know much about him prior to this hire, but he's helped develop some great talent at UND (Toews, Parise, etc.)
i think my favorite part about this hire is that it's not a retread for retread's sake. it would have been real easy to bring a guy like Dineen, Carlyle, or another guy who has "experience." i'm more interested in someone who has new, creative ways to deploy talent in the NHL, than hiring someone who's merit lies in that they've successfully or unsuccessfully did at the NHL level in the past.
If the Flyers goal is to develop their young talent, this seems like a good gamble. I think if you pair Hakstol with Terry Murray as associate coach; you have a good tandem of developmental success (at the collegiate level) with an experienced NHL coach who knows some of these kids well from coaching them in the AHL. |

"Fast" was the word used by Hextall, so to answer your question, I have no idea. |

There was a question where hexy replied that if he had the choice between a established pro assistant versus an established college head coach, he'd go w/ the head coach every time. He also emphasized that it was important that he and the new hire were on the same page philosophically with where the game was going.
Both seemed like roundabout shots at Chief. - Tomahawk

Whatever the hell this is worth.
"Hakstol has a reputation as a very intense, super-serious guy. It's very, very rare to ever see him crack a smile. His teams play a tough, very physical style of hockey. Offensively, he wants his guys to get the puck to the net from anywhere and then grind out rebounds, tips, etc. " |
