Why?

Another TO media proclaimed superstar. People think this guy is something special because he's a +plus player on a squad full of -minuses.

Dime a dozen.

- bloatedmosquito

PK beast, eats a pile of PK time, plays a few spots in the line up, got a bit of size, is a 50% or about face off guy, blocks shots, puts up decent ES points, and is basically cap wise, zero $

Random thought, if we are able to draft one of the three centers in macdavid, eichel or strome, would you send phaneuf to Edmonton for a package based around yakupov?
- ILoveLamp

regardless of who we draft I would send Phaneuf to Edmonton for Yakupov

Leafs want a 2nd & 3rd or 2nd and prospect for Winnik...

anyone think we can actually get either of those for him? I think we can get the picks.

Yet here you are... a very intelligent Canucks fan, devoting his valuable time to poop talking a 3rd/4th line nobody player.... Guess which part I was being sarcastic about.

All about cost.

Winnipeg needs help on the PK. Cheaper, depth gritty players that can score a goal every now and then.

Winnik makes sense to be a fit on the Jets, why is that funny?

- Byfuglien Ate Me

Because winnipeg will have to overpay to get him. There will be cheaper options out there at the trade deadline.

Oh yes,, the TO media loves to hype and praise the Leaf players.
- systemtool

There is some truth to it, not so much media hype but exposure....I have no idea who the bottom 6 forwards are in Jersey or Carolina but everyone knows who they are in TO......but Bloateds message gets lost in his charming personality.

This. He looks decent because we assume all teams have players with a "give a (frank) meter" the same as the Leafs.

If we get a 2nd for Winnik that's a huge steal.

Byfuglien was a joke until this season.. He was accused of being lazy, he was fat and got pinched for DUI while boating! I mean come on that's (frank)ed... Now he's suddenly the role model for someone like Kessel?

I never understood this. If Toronto is trading Kessel it means they're rebuilding. With his salary gone and likely several others, well have more than enough cap space to help another team with their cap problems fitting Kessel in.
- systemtool

We helped Nashville with their internal cap ($8.4 million below the league cap), so, it can be done, but it still limits the bidders to a greater degree than what they'd encounter in the off season, where the cap gymnastics wouldn't be as complicated.

Like the Franson, Santorelli deal though, if they get an offer now that makes sense value wise, I think they'd pull the trigger on a definite, than hope and pray for a better one down the road.

That's all fine but what would it take to get him out of TO?

It's because the Leafs have been irrelevant since the 60's apparently.

Winnik would be in the mix for 4th best forward in terms of points for the Canucks, meaning he would be on their 2nd line?

Meh. He's done what 75% of the NHL's bottom 6 players do.

yeah he is a worthwhile piece. He's actually the kind of guy who would be a good depth pickup for a playoff run.

A 2nd round pick would be awesome.

I just don't understand why people covet that particular player.

I think we can get both... it all depends on how many teams are bidding for his services for the playoffs...

Winnipeg
Pittsburgh

both these teams have interest... I'd prefer Winnipeg as they have higher draft picks and better prospects at the moment...
