Really is a thing of beauty the way they are able to get Tavares and Kadri and others when making their run for the Mem Cup and still be contenders the following year.....

This is the model of consistency teams need to strive for.... yet so few have the patience. Sad thing is Toronto Fans have the patience but management thinks and acts to quickly thinking they dont have the time... when fans understand the situation....

As good as GMs in Tornto have been they either made poor draft selections poor trades or both.. nobody stayed the course....

However Burke did do a great job rebuilding the minors.. and made some smart savvy trades.... but ultimately the Kessel trade was his undoing... that and his gruff disposition.. which Rogers and Bell didn't like so they let him go!

The Leafs are not taking back a bad contract to dump Kessel.
The Leafs aren't "dumping" Kessel at all if they can get a package of good assets that might help going forward more than they feel Kessel will help if they are indeed starting from scratch.

Maybe that's why you haven't had any missed calls from MLSE about a GM position. If you think you're going to get a clear star for star trade than you're missing the point of even trading your bestplayer. The Leafs are at a point where they acknowledge they are going to be a bottom of the standings team for the next half a decade. They don't want to trade him for a star player in his prime right now...they want as many potential pieces that they can get and look towards the next few drafts to find their next superstars...even the idea of unloading Kessel at the deadline for a 1st + also helps Toronto in their goal to tank this season for a lotto pick.
