Is anyone else besides for me in favor of signing Tim Thomas to a $4-$5 million contract for 1 or 2 years and buying out Bryz? Clears up a little cap space, and gives Mason a mentor he can actually learn something from.

I agree about Coburn. I would hate to give him up. The injury issues on D is sticky. No real trade value for Mezzy or else he wold be the person I would try to trade. I just think if you add a D you need to shed one otherwise you have a a lot fo cap space and contracts back there.

I hear you on Briere, I'm holding out hope. I think he might want to do the Flyers a solid and save some face even though he doesn't need to. I don't think he would be giving up much $$ honestly. I can't see a team giving him a great new contract. That actually is an interesting question. How much would he be giving up, figuring in a reasonable new contract?

I'd rather have a lot of cap eaten and available defensemen late in the season than face a repeat of 2004, and have to use rookies who aren't ready or forwards as defensemen to fill injury holes.

Just seems like every year they find themselves in need of defense help in the playoffs, really want to avoid that, even if it means using LTIR relief from Pronger.

Timmonen/Coburn
Grossman/Mezzy
Gus/Oliver

It's a good defense. If everyone is healthy Gus isn't getting much time to develop. I see your point, certainly more cautious in an important position.

As for the Briere buyout question I came up with this math. He is being paid 4M for the next two seasons actual cash. If he is bought out at 2/3 that is 2.66M in his pocket plus the cash from a new contract. That new contract I could see at 3.5/2 years. That is 6.11M compared to 4M if he is traded. A difference of 2.11M to keep his mouth shut and be bought out. Bummer, that is a lot of cash if my numbers are even close.

He's actually owed $5mm over the next 2 years. The buyout will see him paid $833K per year for the next 4 years. He'll also make money on top of that, when he signs a new deal, so he'll easily make the "lost" money from the buyout.

Right now, my Flyers D looks like this:

FNG/Schenn
Timonen/Coburn
Grossmann/Gustafsson
Meszaros/Gervais/Lauridsen, with Gervais & Lauridsen likely being in the AHL, and being recalled if needed.

Wow, my math was way off. That is a serious difference. 833K would mean he needs to make 4.177 per for two years minus 1.666 (the second 2 years)= 2.511M
What do you think he could get on the UFA market? My guess was 3.5/2 years since he will presumably have location restrictions and is 35. That would be a gain of about 1M/year.

If they do acquire a new defenseman, I can't see them keeping all of Coburn, Grossmann, and Meszaros. Somebody is going to have to go.

The best thing to do is not do the math at all. Let Capgeek do it for you. They have a buyout calculator.
I'm not following your numbers. I believe Briere's salary is 3M this upcoming Season, and then 2M in the last year of his deal.

My guess would be that neighborhood, maybe he signs a one year deal and eventually returns to the Flyers after a year elsewhere.

I'd personally hang onto them, just because of the injury uncertainty of the latter two. Of course, I'd be buying out Briere and Bryzgalov this summer, so the cap considerations are different than one who is keeping Bryzgalov.

You'd probably have to buyout both to keep all of them.

I'd be buying both out, regardless. I'm not totally against trading any of them. I'm still open to moving one or even two of them, if they can find cheap replacements.

I'm looking at Meszaros as a 7th guy, and if he can play a semi-regular role at something near a past level, I'm ecstatic. But I'm not eager to have to count on him being a top 6 guy.

PHI: Edler and Kesler (apparently on the trade block for youth)
VAN: Simmonds (or Schenn) and Coburn, 3rd rounder

PHI: Nino Niederretier (wants out of NY and MAY do well with a change in scenery)
NYI: Danny Briere, 4th rounder (yes, I was joking the other day about a 1st)

Both have little chance of happening but both could be positive for all parties.

I think you just about summed it up yourself.

The Canucks are looking at some hard decisions, and they need to lose cap space, but Edler and Kesler play exactly the style that Gillis wants moving forward. I'm sure they would love a guy like Simmonds (and maybe Coburn), but they probably wouldn't be willing to give up core pieces to get him/them.

As for Niederreiter, a lot of players have wanted out of Long Island recently and none of them have gotten their wish.

Even with those buyouts, I can't see having Meszaros with a 4M caphit and a 5.5M salary as a 7th defenseman. I think if he's on the team, he's expected to be in the top 6. I'm not ready to buyout Bryzgalov yet. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen.

Not to change the subject, as maybe this is too serious for Hockeybuzz. But I need to vent. Why does a School, right in the middle of Tornado Alley in Oklahoma. Not have an under ground fortified tornado shelter built into it? Maybe that makes too much sense. As many as 45 kids are unaccounted for and possibly buried under the rubble. Very angry.

I don't see where capgeek tells you the amount of actual take home a player gets. I only see the cap hits so one can play armchair GM. Am I missing something?

I want to know how much money is Briere going to gain if he is bought out (with a hypothetical buyout and new deal)?

Yes, click on the player's name, it will show you the exact details of his contract.

Here's the buyout.

http://www.capgeek.com/bu...3&buyout_m=06&buyout_d=15

This is for a regular buyout. There would be no Cap hit for a compliance buyout. But the payout to the player is the same.

Sweet, thanks! If he could get 3.5/2 years (I think that is at the low end) he would be making an additional $5,333,332 and that is only if he works for another 2 years. That's a lot of reasons to get bought out.

Are you saying 3.5M a year for 2 years? Or 3.5M for both years?

Edit: Did the math. You're saying 3.5M per year for 2 years.
