The Concord, New Hampshire native is the platoon netminder for the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL. Gillies was acquired at the most recent 2023 NHL Trade Deadline in a cap dump deal.

Gillies was originally a third round draft selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames.

Before making it to the NHL, he spent three years in development at Providence College in the NCAA, including winning the National Championship in his final season.

He cracked the main roster in 2017 with his NHL debut, but was the third goalie in 2018 for the Flames backed by the recently retired Mike Smith.

During the shortened COVID-19 bubble years, he was let go by the Flames, and signed on with the St. Louis Blues.

In his second season with the Blues, he was traded for the first time in his career for future considerations. The team that obtained him was the New Jersey Devils.

He stayed with the Devils until this past offseason, and signed with the Arizona Coyotes.

Columbus acquired him as extra depth with the amount of injuries on the roster this season. The return was the inactive and injured Jakub Voracek and a 2023 6th round draft choice.

Gillies won one game in his three appearances with Columbus, defeating the Ottawa Senators.

Gillies is a pending unrestricted free agent, and his best option is to be a full time AHL starter. It will be interesting to see who acquires him. If he wants more income, best bet may be a few seasons in Europe.

More to come...
