Another game, another team edged out in a season series, do we see the theme going here? Beating the bad teams, and losing to the good teams seems to be what is going on in Columbus for the 2021-2022 season. The Blue Jackets squeaked by the Detroit Red Wings in the overtime, by the final score of 5-4.

Jack Roslovic opened the scoring with the lone first period goal for his 13th of the season, with the lone assist coming from defenseman Zach Werenski.

Detroit scored two goals in 3 minutes and 40 seconds in the second to get their first lead of the game. Former Capitals’ first rounder Jakub Vrana evened the game with his 9th of his extremely shortened year, and was unassisted. Former Blue Jackets’ forward Sam Gagner got the go-ahead with his 12th of the campaign; defenseman Marc Staal and cup winner Mitchell Stephens had the first assists for Detroit.

Rookie Cole Sillinger evened the game for Columbus with his 12th of his career; Werenski got his second point of the game; Jakub Voracek had the secondary assist. Roslovic’s second of the game came with the lone assist from long time teammate Patrik Laine. Justin Danforth’s deflection got his career total to 9 in the NHL; Roslovic got his third point of the game, and former Red Wing draft pick and forward Gustav Nyquist got the secondary helper. This concludes Columbus’ regulation goals.

Dylan Larkin, the Detroit captain, brought the game within reach with his 31st; rookie Lucas Raymond and veteran defender Jordan Oesterle had the apples. The final Detroit goal of the game, and second tying goal came from Vrana for his second of the night and 10th of the year; the lone assist was from sophomore Pius Suter.

Roslovic’s game winning goal was a hat-trick for him, making it his 15th of the season. The assists came from Gustav Nyquist and Zach Werenski in the final minute and a half of overtime.

Ohio native Alex Nedeljkovic allowed 5 goals on 33 shots for an 0.848 save percentage; Elvis Merzlikins allowed 4 of 38 for an 0.895 save percentage.

In the 3 games played, Columbus and Detroit tied at 11 goals a piece, for 22 total in their contests with each other. Werenski, the Michigan native and Wolverine alumni, had one goal and 3 assists against his hometown team. Gustav Nyquist, the former Red Wing draft pick, had 4 assists in 3 games against his former team; and Jakub Voracek had 3 assists in 3 games.

Jack Roslovic had 4 points in this game, being the MVP for the Columbus born kid, pushing himself to the top center since the injury of Boone Jenner.

Detroit’s Captain and top rookie forward, Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond, each had 5 points in the 3 games, showing their strength is coming from their offense now and in the future. They have a strong top six, and is continuing to get better with other players coming back from injury in the near future in Vrana, who has only started playing prior to the deadline, and Robby Fabbri who won with St Louis.
