As I was posting...

Per Aaron Portzline of the Athletic, Blue Jackets defenseman Dean Kukan has sustained a fractured wrist in last night’s game against Dallas and is out 6-8 weeks per the club. The undrafted defender is pointless in two games played so far. Is a pending UFA.

Onto the rest below:

My apologies hockey world for being a little bit behind on a lot of everything, a family emergency came up, leading to my lack of content the last several days involving the previous matchups as well as trade rumors and milestones.

Starting with the furthest past, the Carolina Hurricanes stormed their way through the Blue Jackets by the final score of 5-1. Jesper Fast opened the scoring with a wicked snapper shot for his third goal of the season; linemate Jordan Staal had the assist. Minutes later, Vincent Trocheck deflected the puck past Korpi for his first of the season. Andrei Svechinkov and Anthony DeAngelo had the helpers.

In the second period, Boone Jenner ended the shutout with his fourth goal of the season off another power play goal for the captain. Jakub Voracek and Patrik Laine had the assists.

Carolina ended the game scoring three more goals, with two of them being on the power play. Jordan Staal netted his his of the year off a deflection. Brett Peace and Jesperi Kotkniemi had the assists. Sebastian Aho registered his third of the year midway through the third period off a power play shot; Trocheck and Teuvo Terrivanen had the helpers. Trocheck added his second of the game and of the season in the final minutes of the game; Svechinkov and Jacob Slavin tallied the final helpers.

Frederick Andersen stopped 27 of 28 in the contest, good for a 0.964 SV%. Jonas Korpisalo stopped 28 of 33 shots faced from the Hurricanes, good for 0.848 SV%.

Andrei Svechinkov was my player to watch for Carolina, and a night he did have. The Russian winger had two helpers and was a +1 on the evening. He also had three shots on net towards Korpisalo, and also registered a hit in the game. Svechinkov played 15:03 against Columbus.

Jake Bean was my player to watch for Columbus against his former team. Bean was a -2 in 20:19 of time on ice, and registered a minor penalty and a shot block.

CBJ Three Stars of the Game

1. Bonne Jenner — PPG (4)
2. Patrik Laine— assist (4)
3. Jakub Voracek—asssit (5)

Rumor Mill

After suggesting the Blue Jackets should look into claim F Alex Barre-Boulet off of waivers from Seattle, the Tampa Bay Lightning reacquired their lost prospect.

Speaking of centers in the rumor mill, sources continue to speculate about the interest in Sabres superstar Jack Eichel in Columbus as well as about a third of the league. The price is high on the former second overall pick, but the direction is heading toward a grievance between Eichel’s camp and the NHL involving his herniated disc.

A center option that Columbus could look at but aren’t involved in at any stretch is Blackhawks C Dylan Strome, who has fallen outside the top 12 in the forward options in the Windy City. Strome was drafted just after Eichel in 2015 by the Arizona Coyotes. The reported teams interested in his services are the Rangers, Ducks, Blues, and Wild.

Due Domi

Word on the street in Columbus is forward Max Domi could be ahead of schedule when it comes to his fractured rib, that has kept him out of last week’s contests. Domi was apparently in practice yesterday before the Jackets battled with Dallas at home.

Domi has had a goal and 3 assists in the two games played so far with the Blue Jackets this season; he is in the final year of his contract with a cap hit at $5.3M.

The Taunt

Before going into the postgame, we must discuss about the disgusting situation in Columbus as it continues to develop, and that is the tactics involving a Dallas Stars fan toward Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlikins after the conclusion of last night’s contest.

According to Aaron Portzline of the Athletic, Nationwide Arena security is seeking a fan in a Dallas Stars’ sweater after taunting Merzlikins in regard to the death of goaltender Mattis Kivlikiens. Though Merzi kept his composure after the incident, this is not a just move by a fan to do, let alone a person, especially when it comes to death.

Home Cooking

The Columbus Blue Jackets held on to defeat the Dallas Stars by the final score of 4-1 in regulation at home.

Oliver Bjorkstrand opened the scoring with his third goal of the season of a wrist shot. Jack Roslovic and Gregory Hoffman had the helpers.

Seasoning of Hoffman, his goal took Columbus to 2-0, and there were two separate milestones hit for players off this play. After picking up the puck and firing it on past Dallas, Hoffman scored his first career NHL goal, becoming the older player in franchise history to score his first goal. Bjorkstrand also hit a personal milestone with his 100th career assist off this play.

Zach Werenski extended the Columbus lead to 3-0 with his second goal of the season. Sean Kuraly got his first point with Columbus; and Eric Robinson got his first point of the year.

Dallas closed the shutout with a goal from center Tyler Seguin, for his second goal of the campaign. Defenders Esa Lindell and Ryan Suter had the markers.

The last goal was an empty netter, which was dished by Columbus center Alexandre Texier for his second this year. Werenski had the lone assist for the effort.

Braden Holtby stopped 22 of 25 for Dallas, good for an 0.880 save percentage SV%. Elvis Merzlikins saved 31 of 32 shots for an impressive 0.969 SV%.

Only note of interest was that this was Adam Boqvist’s first healthy scratch of the season, as Gabriel Carlsson subbed for him in his regular season debut.

CBJ Three Stars Of The Game

1. Gregory Hoffman— GWG (1), first career goal; assist (2)
2. Oliver Bjorkstrand— goal (3), assist (6); 100th career assist
3. Elvis Merzlikins—- W, 96.9 SV%
