Ty Smith has done it again.

Today the highly touted New Jersey Devils prospect was named WHL’s top defenseman for the second year in a row.

Smith put up 59 points in 46 games for a very good Spokane Chiefs team during the 2019-20 campaign. Be it goal scoring or overall production, Smith’s numbers on a per game basis were noticeably higher than a season ago.

Smith’s efficiency stats were also much better, and his impact on the team’s goal differential was shockingly good.

He went from plus-6 at even-strength, with a slightly negative Relative GF%, to a plus-51. Spokane’s share of the goals was nearly 20%(!) higher with Smith on the ice.

Suffice to say, Smith was as dominant as anyone and fully deserving of taking home the hardware once again.

Nothing will be given, of course, but he’s a great bet to make the Devils out of camp whenever the 2020-21 season begins – and not just out of necessity.

Smith is ready.
