Calgary Flames make smart one-year gamble on Dominik Simon |

The Calgary Flames have added another depth forward into the mix, as today Dominik Simon put pen to paper on a one-year contract worth $700,000.
The 26-year-old winger played the last few seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he quietly developed into a very useful two-way player.
Simon amassed 50 points in 135 games over the last two years. That equates to 30 points per 82 games; impressive production for a bottom-6 winger.
Although they took a bit of a hit this year, his defensive impacts were also quite strong. Pittsburgh allowed 5.44 fewer attempts, and 0.21 fewer expected goals, per 60 minutes with Simon the ice.
Simply put, he produced points at a pretty good clip while slowing down opposing offenses.
In terms of what traits Simon brings to the table that lend itself to those results...he is a quick, north-south player. He is very effective on the forecheck and he’s good at using his stick to help pry pucks free.
With the puck, he likes to carry the puck up ice and attack with speed through the neutral zone. He generates solid volume but he is not a great shooter. I feel he is more of a passer and that his ability in that regard is underrated.
I think this is an excellent signing for the Flames. Simon is exactly the type of player they need more of in the bottom-6, and he gives them flexibility in that he is capable of playing up the lineup if needed in a pinch.
