It came down to the wire but the Calgary Flames and Garnet Hathaway managed to find common ground in advance of today's arbitration hearing.

Hathaway has inked a one-year deal worth $850,000. It is a one-way contract so he'll earn his full salary whether he is playing in Calgary, Stockton, or anywhere else.

Had the scheduled arbitration hearing been necessary, the Flames would have argued for 650K while Hathaway's camp would have pushed for $975K. Both sides had to come off their stance a little to get this deal done.

Hathaway appeared in a career-high 59 NHL games this past season. He played with an edge and posted respectable on-ice numbers at 5v5 (53.4 Corsi For%, 51.1 Goals For%) but his offensive output, or lack thereof, left a lot to be desired.

He averaged only 1.19 points per 60 at 5v5, which slotted him below the likes of Jay Beagle, Nic Deslauriers, Daniel Winnik, Cal Clutterbuck and Tom Pyatt. Not great considering he spent a lot of time alongside Mark Jankowski and Sam Bennett on the 3rd line.

As putrid as Hathaway's rate stats were, they may paint a brighter picture of his offensive ability than his micro stats.

Over the 25-game sample, Hathaway posted numbers that almost put him in Tanner Glass and Cody McLeod territory.

If Hathaway is on an NHL roster, it's clear he's best suited to play a minor role as a rotational forward.

With all of the off-season additions Calgary has made up front, I'd think that's the likely outcome.
