I'm utterly convinced now that Chiarelli is just trying to get fired.

There were things I did not like about Drake Caggiula's game but he was a top 9 winger who is able to produce. Ignoring the fact that Brandon Manning is another mediocre at best third pairing defender....Chiarelli just traded for the guy who broke Connor McDavid's collarbone...and taunted him about it the next time they played.

To make matters worse, Manning is signed for this season and next season for a cap hit of 2.25 million.

I wonder if Connor McDavid was talked to before this trade occurred but I already know the answer. How Chiarelli is still allowed to make moves is beyond me. Get him out immediately.

Oh and the Oilers also acquired 23 year old prospect Robin Norell.

After another embarrassing loss last night to the tune of 7-4, Chiarelli has decided to make a trade.

QUICK UPDATE

Chiarelli is a bad GM.

-----

Petrovic, a right shot defender is a native of Edmonton, and it is always great for a hometown kid to return. Wideman clearly was never trusted by Hitchcock, which was apparent when he would continue to put Jason Garrison onto the ice over him.

Petrovic has played some decent hockey over his young career, producing 49 points in 254 games (5-44-49). All five of his goals have come at even strength as have all but one of his assists. Wideman was brought in as a powerplay weapon but that clearly never panned out. Petrovic, who has averaged over 17 minutes a game this season is a better all around player.

Make no mistake, this is still a purely lateral move; Petrovic despite playing well in past years has only registered a single assist this season so this is another reclamation project. Adding a third pairing defenceman who might be able to chip in the top four from time to time will not cure what ails this team. The fact that Chiarelli is also still being allowed to trade assets does not tickle me either. Petrovic is a UFA after this season, and trading a third round pick for a third pairing defenceman who might be gone in a few months is not good asset management. That is what we have come to expect from Peter Chiarelli.
