Let’s examine Johnny Gaudreau because his name has been thrown out there lately that the Devils may have interest.

It has been reported that the Devils, Flyers and Islanders have serious interest in the South Jersey native. Gaudreau is coming off an impressive 40 goal, 115 point season and will get a monster pay day in his prime at the age of 29.

At the very least, Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald needs to drive up the price and weaponize his cap space to make sure that if the Devils lose out on the Johnny Hockey sweepstakes to their Metropolitan Division rivals, they would have to overpay dearly. But would Gaudreau even consider the Devils?

Let’s be honest. The Devils have been the league’s worst teams in points and you have to consider that Gaudreau would not want to partake in taking a couple steps backwards with a team that cannot make the playoffs. However, Fitzgerald did land Dougie Hamilton last offseason by selling him the future. What else do the Devils offer aside from money?

Jack Hughes for the next eight years.

If Hughes and Gaudreau were to ever be playing on same line, they would be an electrifying speed demon nightmare for NHL defenseman to keep up with while creating NHL highlight reels on a nightly basis. It would be worth overpaying Gaudreau especially from a marketing perspective. He is from the Garden State. However, the Flyers may have the sentimental advantage here because of their proximity of where Gaudreau grew up. We shall see.
