Currently, the New Jersey Devils find themselves tied for the league lead in points with the Boston Bruins. Each team has 43 points thus far with the Bruins having one game at hand. However, New Jersey does have one more regulation win than Boston. We’ll find out on December 23rd and 28th at the Rock as these two Eastern Conference rivals duke it out. These games may serve as an early preview if they meet in the postseason.
The Devils also play their Metropolitan Division rivals Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers twice during this stretch. Another game to watch for is when the Dallas Stars come into town on Tuesday December 13th, after the Devils played the Rangers the night before at Madison Square Garden.
The fourteen games in thirty days stretch will be brutal. It can also serve as an opportunity for the Devils to pad their lead in the Metropolitan Division if they maintain their torrid pace. Since October 25th, New Jersey has earned 37 out of 40 possible points. Moreover, this 30 day challenge could vault the Devils to the top of the entire NHL.
Thoughts and Musings
The Athletic put out an article recently about attendance. The Devils “technically” ranked 30th in the NHL for fan attendance at the Rock, despite their recent success. My co-host on State of the Fan Address, Nick Villano, wrote a piece on Pucks and Pitchforks blog: New Jersey Devils Attendance Debate Getting Old
Not all teams’ arenas and schedules are created equal. This debate is getting old and the fine writers at The Athletic made no mention of boisterous Devils fans invading MSG or Wells Fargo Center with loud “Let’s Go Devils chants” and even taunting the home team’s goalie in their own building. However, anytime the distinguished hockey media starts poking fun of the Devils and their fans, it is a good sign they have nothing else to write or talk about. Why? Because the Devils are good. And scary good!
