The Avalanche announced Thursday they have named Greg Cronin as coach of the Colorado Eagles, their new American Hockey League affiliate.

Aaron Schneekloth?

After coaching the Eagles to back-to-back ECHL championships, he will remain as an assistant coach with Ryan Tobler, who was Schneekloth’s assistant the past two seasons. Ryan Bach will remain as goalie coach.

Cronin, 55, spent the past four seasons with the New York Islanders, three as an assistant coach and last year as associate coach.

"We feel Greg is the perfect fit to lead the Eagles as they begin their first season in the American Hockey League," Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic said in a release. "He has an extensive coaching background, including time as a head coach in the AHL.

“Greg not only has experience coaching players at the NHL and AHL levels, but also developing players at the college level and with the U.S. National Team Development Program.”

Cronin also was an assistant with the Islanders from 1998 to 2003; coach of the AHL Bridgeport Sound Tigers from 2003-05, and an assistant with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2011-14.

He spent six seasons as coach at Northeastern University from 2005-11 and won the Hockey East’s Bob Kullen Coach of the Year Award in 2009. Cronin also has been an assistant at Maine (1988-90, 1993-95) and Colorado College (1990-93). He played four years at Colby College (1982-86) and began his coaching career there in 1987-88.

Cronin was a co-founder of the United States National Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. He served as coach and director of player development for the U.S. Under-18 Team from 1996-98. He worked as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 1997, 2011 and 2012 IIHF World Championships, as well as the 1997 and 1998 IIHF World Junior Championships.

Schneekloth and Tobler led the Eagles to a 95-38-11 record in two seasons with a 32-12 record in the playoffs.
