Dog Days of Summer: Jets Edition

No news is really not bad news in Winnipeg but as the heat soars- it was above 40C with the humid yesterday- no one is really thinking about hockey. That is until you see a Twitter pic of Michael Hutchinson at the Iceplex in a Panthers jersey.

For the Jets it's business as usual, no news. Josh Morrissey remains and enigma and no one seems to know what's going on. Even the locals out at Lake of the Woods can't seem to get more than a video of Chevy dancing. When in town he's left alone on the patio at Mona Lisa with his family (as he should be) without a car driving by hollering "sign Josh".

It's quiet. Too quiet really.

At some point news will trickle out and something will happen but other than the general Twitter debates it seems the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have taken over the lead in the sports news cycle.

Here's the thing that's going to bother Jets fans: if Morrissey's is drawn out long is it a sign of how the team negotiates and will that be affect other players needing deals soon? *Looking at the 77 goals from Connor and Laine last season*

Now consider that the fear of losing Trouba might be partially at bay but underneath the arbitration award the fear is still there and so is the conjecture and rumour of a relationship souring. Long gone are the words from this past spring about wanting to stay with team to win. What about the Bromance with Scheifele? Is that going to get tossed too in the quest for money or freedom or both?

The general feeling with the more dedicated of the social media fans is that the Jets have some challenges. They have to figure out how Bryan Little can be a solid number 2 centre given his salary and contract. It's not changing Little as much as finding the right combination of line mates as Ehlers and Laine simply do not work in that trio.

What about the third line which will be anchored by Perreault and maybe Roslovic plus who- Dano or Petan? Gone are the depth guys of Matthias and Hendricks that Maurice chose to rely on, or not. Also the stark reminder that the options Paul Stastny provided have since left too so the Jets truly need some development from their drafting now.

But these are simply the thoughts created in the dog days of summer, the hot August nights that distract from the bigger picture. The Jets have many big decisions to make about what this team will look like come next season. So let's add one more thought...

What do the Jets look like for the 2019-20 season without Blake Wheeler or Jacob Trouba? I ask this because there's a very good chance that's closer to reality than them being Jets.
