The Week Ahead

An ugly road trip to Western Canada resulted in two losses, bringing the road losing streak to six games. Let’s face it, the injuries are finally catching up to this team. Next man up is one thing… but sustaining it for weeks at a time is another. The fact that Nashville is playing .500 hockey over this timeframe and still has a tenuous hold on first in the Central is a bonus.

At this point, being home is a very good thing… three consecutive at Bridgestone Arena this week, the last home games before Christmas. This week features three very winnable games, even in Nashville’s depleted state. Tomorrow night, the Ottawa Senators are in town, expected to be a walkover in preseason, the Senators are playing some decent hockey and hovering around the .500 mark.

Thursday night sees the Vancouver Canucks in town, a potential for little payback from last Thursday night’s loss. Vancouver continues to surprise as their rebuild looks a little more like a reload. The Canucks are out of the playoff mix right now but if they get some consistent goaltending, they could be back in the hunt fairly quickly.

Then, for the weekend, the New Jersey Devils come in for a Saturday night inter-conference tilt. After a great start to the season, the Devils have regressed and are currently at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. In a weird scheduling quirk… the Devils finish a West Coast roadie in San Jose tonight, then fly back to Newark for a Firday night matchup against Vegas, then take off postgame for Nashville. Tough stretch for the Devils.

For Nashville, the thing they need is health… the IR list needs to shrink a little. Viktor Arvidsson has been on IR since November 12th and the time frame for return given was four-six weeks. Today is four weeks from the date Arvy went on IR, no update has been given there. PK Subban was placed on IR on 11/15 but there has been no timeframe for return for his “upper body injury.”

Same story with Kyle Turris, he was placed on IR on 11/25 and, as with Subban, no injury disclosure or timeframe for return was given. And then there was Filip Forsberg, who was placed on IR on 12/1 with a 4 to 6 week return timetable… which means no return until 2019.

Limited tickets remain for this homestand.
