UPDATE - Per Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Hyman's agent, Todd Reynolds: "Zach will be signing elsewhere. He won't be returning to Toronto." Agreement in place with Oilers. Holland and Dubas working on compensation.

Winger Zach Hyman’s departure to the Edmonton Oilers may be a foregone conclusion, but the chances of the Toronto Maple Leafs getting something for the free agent winger seem to be somewhere between slim and none. Reports on Thursday indicated that the Oilers have reached a preliminary agreement with the 29-year-old Toronto native, but that was due to the Leafs giving agent Todd Reynolds the freedom to talk to other teams.

The Leafs and Seattle are the only two teams who can sign Hyman to an eight-year max deal and according to numerous reports, the structure of a seven-year deal over an eight-year deal without compensating the Leafs for a sign-and-trade would increase the AAV for the Oilers by $400,000 to $500,000.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on Friday that a discussion between Oilers GM Ken Holland and Leafs GM Kyle Dubas yielded an offer of a low round pick for Toronto to help out the Oilers, similar to the price that the New York Rangers paid to get the negotiating rights for Barclay Goodrow.

Edmonton has five picks in this weekend’s NHL Draft (a 1st, 4th, two 6ths and 7th), which likely means the Oilers offered the extra sixth. Toronto has three picks this weekend (2nd, 5th and 6th) after having traded a 1st and 4th in the Nick Foligno deal and their third in the Jack Campbell/Kyle Clifford last year, so it would make sense that they would at least be looking to get back into the fourth round.

In a flat cap world the next few seasons, being able to shave $400,000 to 500,000 would be invaluable, so the price of a mid-round pick would seem reasonable. If Edmonton balks at the price, they have the option of telling the Leafs ‘no thanks’, but Dubas should not make it easier on the Oilers cap situation.
