The Toronto Maple Leafs put forth another fine effort in the pre-season, as Nick Ritchie scored a pair of goals in a 6-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday, and began to reduce their roster and send players to their AHL affiliate for the beginning of their camp.

Following the return of defenseman William Villeneuve to his QMJHL team last week, the Leafs demoted forward Pavel Gogolev and Filip Kral to the Marlies on Monday, sent goalie Erik Kallgren, defensemen Mac Hollowell, Kristians Rubins, Joseph Duszak, Noel Hoefenmayer, Teemu Kivihalme, and forwards Semyon Der-Argushintsev, Mikhail Abramov, Jack Kopacka, Jeremy McKenna and Nick Robertson on Tuesday.

The club also placed goalie Michael Hutchinson on waivers, released winger Nikita Gusev from his professional tryout and signed forward Josh Ho-Sang to an AHL contract.

Robertson, who just turned 20 and missed a sizable chunk of last season injured, has played only 31 professional games over the last two seasons and will benefit from playing top six minutes and on special teams with the Marlies.

Hutchinson played 10 games last season and spent most of the year on Toronto’s taxi squad, but with the backup situation and injuries clouding the goaltending picture on a few NHL teams, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman believes that the 31-year-old could be claimed on Wednesday.

Gusev was thoroughly unimpressive in his limited opportunities during training camp, which made his being cut an easy decision. Ho-Sang played very well in exhibition games, displayed his high-end playmaking with four assists and displayed a positive attitude, something that the Leafs want to see more of before committing to an NHL deal.

The Leafs are traveling to Gravenhurst, ON for two days of practice and team building before finishing off their exhibition schedule against Ottawa at home on Saturday.

Toronto is down to 31 players:

Goalies (3): Jack Campbell, Petr Mrazek, Joseph Woll (Inj)

Defensemen (9): Alex Biega, TJ Brodie, Carl Dahlstrom, Travis Dermott, Justin Holl, Brennan Menell, Jake Muzzin, Morgan Rielly, Rasmus Sandin.

(Timothy Liljegren is not listed on the Leafs website on their roster, but has not reportedly been sent down).

Forwards (19): Michael Amadio, Joey Anderson, Michael Bunting, Pierre Engvall, Kurtis Gabriel, David Kampf, Ondrej Kase, Alexander Kerfoot, Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews (Inj), Ilya Mikheyev, William Nylander, Nick Ritchie, Kirill Semyonov, Brett Seney, Wayne Simmonds, Jason Spezza, Alex Steeves(Inj), John Tavares
