The first round of the Pierre Dorion’s Best Trade Tournament is officially over. The last matchup of the first round brought Curtis Lazar more success than he had during his career with the Senators. Today, the second round begins:
Dorion’s number-one goal in 2019-20 was to trade pending free agents for picks, and he did exactly that by sending Pageau to the Islanders. Pageau was having a wonderfully hot season before the deal, which allowed the GM to derive extreme value from the exchange. Having three first-round picks in this year’s draft, one of which is courtesy of this trade, makes this a franchise defining time in Senators history. Any trade that plays a part in creating such a moment will be considered a favorite in a tournament like this.
Trade: Sieloff --> ANA
Out: Patrick Sieloff
In: Brian Gibbons
This is one of a few minor trades that made it through the first round. After being acquired in the deal that sent Alex Chiasson to the Flames, Sieloff spent a couple seasons in Belleville without doing much. As was noted in the comments section earlier, perhaps Sieloff’s most notable moment with the Senators was injuring Clarke MacArthur. That’s the definition of being remembered for the wrong reason.
In 2019, Dorion sent Sieloff to the Ducks in exchange for Brian Gibbons, who instantly made a big impact with the NHL Senators. He tallied 14 points in 20 games with the Senators, before leaving as a free agent last summer. The long-term impacts of this deal were negligible for both teams, but Gibbons’ short-term success with the Senators suggests that this was a minor win for Dorion.
