Catching up on the news of the 2020 Draft Lottery. Wow...

I thought I was seeing things when looking at the results:

1. Team That Loses in Qualifying Round of Playoffs
2. Kings
3. Senators
4. Wings
5. Senators
6. Ducks
7. Devils
8. Sabres

It appears a team from the the qualifying round has somehow found it's way to the #1 spot as a placeholder team.

Weird...

The Sporting News has a nice article that helps breakdown how the #1 spot came to be and what/how a Phase 2 will work in order to figure out that #1 pick. Below is an excerpt:

"How will Phase 2 of the NHL Draft lottery work?

If necessary, a second lottery drawing will be held on a yet-to-be-determined date between the qualifying and first rounds of the 2020 NHL playoffs.

Here are the rules of the Phase 2 lottery drawing, per the NHL:

- Phase 2 participants will include all eight teams that do not advance from the Qualifying Round (or the teams that have acquired their first-round picks).

- In each Phase 2 draw, all participants will have the same odds.

- Following each Phase 2 draw, the winning team will be assigned the corresponding top three selection in the 2020 NHL Draft and, if another Phase 2 draw is necessary, that team’s numbered lottery ball will be removed.

- When all Phase 1 and Phase 2 draws are completed and the top three selections in the 2020 NHL Draft have been awarded, the remaining selections in the top 15 will be assigned to the 12 teams that did not win a draw, in inverse order of their points percentages at the time of the pause in the regular season."

What's interesting is that if the Cats are knocked out of the qualifying round, they now have a chance to grab that #1 Lottery spot through the Phase 2 lottery.

What a strange turn of events. Curious to see how it all shakes out!

Panthers Uncaged

Yesterday the Panthers announced they will be doing a five-part video series that chronicles their prep for a return to play since COVID restrictions were lifted.

I was hoping they would do something like this, so I'm really pumped.

From the Panthers site:

"We wanted to give our Panthers family a behind-the-scenes look at what our players, trainers and staff are doing to ensure a safe environment as the NHL's Return to Play plan begins," said Florida Panthers Senior Vice President Shawn Thornton. "During these unprecedented times, we aim to provide access into players' lives to showcase their emotions, perseverance and dedication in their quest to bring the franchise its first Stanley Cup. Thanks to Lexus for helping us to bring fans this exclusive look at the hours in the gym, the whatever-it-takes attitude and more."

It's always cool to get a peek behind the curtain and I'm hoping this series will deliver some cool insight. Catch it on Facebook, IGTV, PanthersVision and YouTube on July 1 at 5 p.m. ET.
