The Maple Leafs 2018 preseason schedule commences September 18th against their Ontario rival, Ottawa Senators. That gives the Buds about a month to sign their eighth overall selection in the 2014 Draft.

William Nylander is coming off back to back 61 point seasons and has certainly gotten a stronger core from when he first started with the Leafs back in 2015-16 when he got his first taste. With 135 points in 185 NHL games Nylander has certainly done well for himself and the blue and white.

Willy has made it very obvious that he wants to sign a long term deal with the Leafs. Dubas has already won the hearts of all the Toronto fans after signing Tavares in the off season. All he has to do here is use Nylanders request as leverage and sign him for the long haul and knock off some dollars off the table in doing so. Sounds easy right?

After all Nylander is playing with Matthews most of the time…

Well, not so easy.

Nylander is going to cost the Leafs and Dubas a pretty penny. Ideally the Leafs are able to squeeze in Matthews, Nylander and Marner all for quality deals like Rielly and Kadri took. After adding Tavares to the mix the Leafs are obviously much tighter to the cap and will have to be wise with their deals on the three youngsters. If you ask me, the Nylander deal really sets precedent going forward for future deals in the Dubas era.

So far so good Kyle Dubas.

I say bring in Nylander, sign him eight years, he will be 30 at the end of the contract and to me that sounds fantastic. Having Tavares, Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Kadri and Rielly all signed gives the Leafs great hope in other high quality UFA’s coming to the club and it also leads me to believe the Maple Leafs will have a real sniff of the Cup, especially with Babcock guiding the ship.

Exciting times in Leaf land, let’s see what the future brings with the Nylander deal.

Go long Mr. Dubas!

What do you think? Nylander a bridge deal or go long term? If a bridge deal what will be his salary/term? If long term; how long and how much?

You can expect the Leafs to sign Nylander in the first two weeks of September before training camp.

Thanks for reading,

Have a great day.
