It’s been an interesting draft to watch, as always some players slipped in the draft order, others bounced upwards but by the time it was the Habs turn to speak there were still some great players available. Fans from Québec would probably have liked to see the Canadiens take a gamble on Hendrix Lapierre, a talented forward who had his troubles with health, or to pick-up Dawson Mercer from the Saguenéens who finished 10th on the final scouting list of North American skaters but someone who was higher on this list was still available… Kaiden Guhle a big left-handed defenseman standing tall at 6’3” and 187 lbs who was 8th on the list was the Habs’ pick.
Why? Well Bergevin said that he liked his size, skating, range and the offensive skills he brings to the game as well as being hard to play against. In two complete seasons with the Prince Albert Raiders, Guhle got 17 points in 65 games and 40 points in 64 games. Some scouting reports mention that Guhle does have the potential to be a top pairing defenseman in the NHL so Habs fans should really give this one a chance. He ended up being only the 3rd defenseman picked tonight.
Guhle said he was very proud to be selected by the Canadiens and he was really excited (even though it didn't look like it in the interview). He played down the fact that he was picked in the first round while his brother Brendan was drafted 51st overall in the 2nd round by the Sabres back in 2015. The Habs’ newest prospect pointed out that while he was selected higher, his older brother has a lot more NHL games under his belt.
Expect a lot more about the newcomer in the coming days!
Ce fut un repêchage intéressant à regarder, comme toujours, certains espoirs ont glissé dans l’ordre de sélection alors que d’autres ont gravi des échelons, mais quand est venu le tour du CH de sélectionner, il y avait encore de très bons joueurs disponibles. Les partisans du Québec auraient probablement voulu que le Canadien donne une chance à Hendrix Lapierre, un attaquant talentueux qui a eu des problèmes de santé, ou qu’il opte pour Dawson Mercer des Saguenéens de Chicoutimi qui avait terminé 10e sur la liste de la centrale de recrutement pour les patineurs nord-américains….mais quelqu’un d’encore plus haut sur la liste était toujours disponible… Kaiden Guhle un gros défenseur gaucher qui fait 6’3” et 187 lbs qui était 8e sur cette même liste fut le choix du Tricolore.
Pourquoi? Et bien, Bergevin mentionne qu’il aimait son physique, son coup de patin, sa portée ainsi que les habilités offensives qu’il peut amener ainsi que le fait qu’il est difficile à affronter. En 2 saison complètes avec les Raiders de Prince Albert, Guhle a amassé 17 points en 65 matchs et 40 points en 64 parties. Certains rapports mentionnent que Guhle a le potentiel pour devenir un défenseur de première paire dans le circuit Bettman, les partisans du CH devrait définitivement lui donner une chance. Au final, il a été le 3e défenseur sélectionné ce soir.
En entrevue, Guhle a mentionné qu’il est très fier d’avoir été sélectionné par Montréal et qu’il était vraiment excité (même s’il n’en avait pas l’air). Il ne considère pas que le fait d’être un choix de première ronde lui permet de narguer son frère Brendan qui avait été sélectionné 51e au total en deuxième ronde par les Sabres en 2015. Le jeune homme mentionne que son frère a joué beaucoup plus de match dans la LNH que lui.
