Where Does Staal Fit in

It has already been 10 long days since Bergevin pulled the trigger on the Staal trade to bring reinforcements at centre and tonight, we’ll finally see what he can (still) do. For the first time, Staal skated with his new teammates in Brossard this morning.

According to what we saw on the ice, these should be the lines and pairings tonight:
Tatar - Danault – Gallagher
Perry - Suzuki – Anderson
Drouin - Staal – Toffoli
Byron - Kotkaniemi - Lehkonen
*Evans is rotating with Lehkonen

Edmundson – Weber
Kulak – Petry
Romanov – Mete

So, it looks like Evans will be the odd man out tonight. I’m pleased that none of the centres were moved to the wing, however, I find it a bit annoying that once again, Kotkaniemi is saddled with the less productive wingers. The way I see it, KK has been playing better than Nick Suzuki lately and he should have better line mates.

Furthermore, is Staal still fast enough to play elsewhere than on the 4th line? I’ll be honest, I’ve not watched a single Buffalo game this season, so I do not know for sure. What I do know however is that he has slowed down a lot according to the Buffalo media. We’ll see if being in Montreal gives him a new spring in his step so to speak.
At least, Ducharme has shown times and times again that when a combination doesn’t work, he’s comfortable making the necessary changes on the fly.
There will also be a change on the Weber power play unit with Staal taking over Anderson’s spot:
Staal- Toffoli - Drouin - Suzuki Weber

It’s also worth noting that this morning, the Habs have recalled Otto Leskinen to the taxi squad. A left-handed defenseman, Leskinen has gathered 14 points in 23 games and has impressed since the start of the season. I’ll admit that I’d like to see him get inserted in the line-up and see what he can do. He’s mobile, has a good first pass, a good shot and quite the offensive instinct.

Tonight, the Canadiens will welcome the Oilers at the Bell Centre at 7:00 PM and Carey Price will be the starting goalie. Hopefully, the Canadiens will bounce back from Saturday’s loss and Eric Staal will fit right in.

Edit: Carey Price left practice early with afinger injury to his right hand, we'll see if he's good to go tonight.

Staal- Toffoli - Drouin - Suzuki Weber
