Even though Bergevin had said that he had big expectations for his team this year, he didn't go out and get them a lot of help before the trade market closed. Considering how the Habs played in their last 3 games, perhaps Bergevin realized that this wouldn't be their year.

In the end, Montreal got Eric Staal from Buffalo on March 26th for a 3rd round and 5th round picks in the upcoming draft with 50% of his salary retained. Jon Merrill from Detroit for a 5th round pick and Hayden Verbeek yesterday and finally, Eric Gustafsson from Philadelphia today.

Bergevin's final move was to grab Gustafsson in return for a 7th round pick in 2022 and the Flyers retaining 50% of his salary. A few season ago, he got 60 points while playing for Chicago. This season, he's only played 24 games and not a single one in the month of April.

This is by no means a savior but it is an offensive defenseman who can skate, and unlike Mete, has a good shot. In the end, Bergevin didn't give much to get him and he stayed true to his motto: you can never have too much depth on D. Victor Mete being claimed on waivers was a sign that he would look for more help on the blue line.

Bergevin will talk to the media at 6:00 PM and we'll likely hear once more that trades are hard.

Tonight, the Canadiens will host the Maple Leafs at the Bell Centre and the puck will drop at 7:00 PM. There are still no confirmation on who will be between the pipes, Allen was lit up last week, but the way the Canadiens are playing right now, using Primeau could be throwing him into the lions' den.
