It’s often been said that Marc Bergevin wasn’t very open with the media but in the last year or so, you really cannot fault him for that. The lines and defense pairings were exactly as one who paid attention to the general manager’s declarations in the last few months would have expected. He said last January that he thought Romanov would be in Montreal this season and start off on the third paring to find his footing, Joel Edmundson told us Bergevin had told him he could be asked to play on the left with Petry, when he announced Toffoli’s signing, he said that he had checked with him if he would be willing to play on the left, hinting that the plan was to have him on his off wing. All of these hints came to fruition and yesterday at group A’s practice, these were the lines and pairings:

A few thoughts on those lines and pairings: given the short time available to make this new line-up work, it makes sense to bet on existing chemistry. The Tatar-Danault-Gallagher is a proven recipe and splitting them up right now would be counter productive. Suzuki and Drouin clicked in the bubble so keeping them made sense and adding Anderson to the mix makes even more sense, he’s a big body and he’s not afraid to play rough along the board, he’ll retrieve the pucks in areas where Drouin doesn’t dare to go. Putting Armia alongside Kotkaniemi has also worked in the past and he’s got more of a scoring touch than Lehkonen, making it perfectly logical to replace the third Finn by Toffoli who has more finishing than the Finn. Both Evans and Kulak played well in the bubble and the coaching staff is aware of that, they find themselves in the line-up and the job is theirs to lose. Evans has the inside track on Poehling and the former first round pick will probably find himself in Laval come February 5th because he really needs to play. As for Kulak, Edmundson’s arrival has pushed him down to the 3rd pair and Romanov’s presence means he plays on his offside for now, but at least, he’s in the line-up.
After practice, Julien, Weber and Price all spoke to the media and nothing ground-breaking was said really. However, it’s crystal clear that the trio is well-aware of the general manager’s high expectations and they share them. Of course, Julien said that we shouldn’t take the lines we saw as his final roster, but he was always going to say that. The coach also mentioned that with the new-found depth at right wing, we could see Joel Armia playing on the left as he’s expressed interest in playing on his off wing. As for Corey Perry, Julien had only nice things to say about him and I really wouldn’t be surprised if he was part of the opening night roster, we’ll see what happens when he joins practice today. He very well might start on the right wing of the 5th line for now, sending Weal to group B.
The coach also gave some details about the intra-squad games scheduled for Thursday and Sunday. The first one will take place at 11:00 AM and will consist in 3 15-minutes period. The second one will be like a proper exhibition game, 3 timed 20-minutes period played at 7:00 PM. The schedule for the season with the game times is now available and Habs fans can expect a few late nights when the team plays in Vancouver.
Following last night’s semi-finals at the World Junior Championships, we now know that a Canadiens’ prospect will leave Edmonton with a gold medal as both Canada and the USA have booked their ticket for the final. Canada completely dominated its game, winning 5-0 against Russia in a game were Askarov really wasn’t at his best. As for the USA, it had a lot more trouble beating the Finns. With less than 5 minutes to go, Finland tied things up at 3 goals a piece and it was Arthur Kaliyev’s goal with a minute and 16 seconds left that sent the Americans through to the final. Caufield got himself an assist in the game and had a few scoring chances without finding the back of the net, he also took a very ill-advised penalty for delay-of-game after sending the puck in the stands. Thankfully, Finland couldn’t convert on that power-play. The gold medal game will take place tonight at 9:30 PM.

Les trios et paires de défenseurs que nous avons vu au camp hier étaient exactement ceux auquel une personne qui a porté attention à ses déclarations des derniers mois devait s’attendre. En janvier dernier, il avait dit qu’il voyait Romanov sur la troisième paire de défenseur à Montréal pour lui permettre de s’adapter, Joel Edmundson nous a dit après avoir signé son contrat que le DG lui avait dit qu’il jouerait à gauche avec Jeff Petry, quand Bergevin a annoncé la signature de Toffoli, il a spécifié que celui-ci était prêt à jouer sur l’aile gauche, signalant que c’était le plan de l’utiliser sur ce côté. Tous ces indices se sont révélés vrais hier alors que pendant l’entraînement du groupe A, les trios et paires étaient les suivants :

Quelques commentaires sur l’alignement: considérant le peu de temps dont l’équipe dispose afin de trouver de la cohésion, il est tout à fait logique de parier sur la chimie existante. Le ligne Tatar-Danault-Gallagher est une recette qui a fait ses preuves et les séparer maintenant ne serait vraiment pas productif. Suzuki et Drouin ont commencé à cliquer dans la bulle et garder ce duo constitue du gros bon sens et l’ajout d’Anderson aussi. Il est gros et n’a pas peur de la robustesse le long de la bande, il pourra aller chercher la rondelle dans les coins ou Drouin n’ose pas aller. Mettre Armia avec Kotkaniemi a aussi bien fonctionné dans le passé et il possède une touche de marqueur supérieure à celle de Lehkonen, c’est donc tout à fait logique de remplacer le 3e finlandais par Toffoli qui est aussi un meilleur marqueur. Evans et Kulak ont tous deux bien joué dans la bulle et le personnel d’entraîneur en est pleinement conscient ce qui explique qu’ils se retrouvent dans la formation. Evans est en avance sur Poehling et l’ancien premier choix se retrouvera probablement à Laval le 5 février parce qu’il a vraiment besoin de jouer. Quant à Kulak, l’arrivée d’Edmundson l’a relégué à la troisième paire et la présence de Romanov signifie qu’il joue sur le côté oppose pour l’instant, mais il est au moins dans la formation.
Après l’entraînement, Julien, Weber et Price ont tous parlé aux médias et pour être honnête, ils n’ont rien dit qui sortait de l’ordinaire. Toutefois, c’est très clair que tous trois sont au courant des attentes élevées de l’organisation et qu’ils les partagent. Bien sûr, Julien a aussi dit qu’on ne devrait pas prendre pour acquis que les lignes et paires du jour ne devraient pas être vu comme son alignement finale, mais c’était certain qu’il allait dire ça. Le coach a également mentionné qu’avec la nouvelle profondeur du côté droit, on pourrait voir Joel Armia jouer sur la gauche puisqu’il a fait part de son intérêt. Quant à Corey Perry, Julien n’avait que de bonnes choses à dire sur lui et je ne serais pas surprise de le voir dans l’alignement le 13 janvier, on verra ce qui arrivera quand il se joindra à la pratique aujourd’hui. Il pourrait fort bien commencer à l’aile sur la 5e ligne pour l’instant, envoyant ainsi Weal avec le groupe B.
Le coach a également donné certains détails sur les deux matchs intra-équipe qui se tiendront jeudi et dimanche. Le premier aura lieu à 11:00 AM jeudi et consistera de 3 périodes de 15 minutes. Quant au second, il sera exactement comme un vrai match hors-concours, c’est à dire 3 périodes chronométrée de 20 minutes, qui débutera à 7 :00 PM. Le calendrier de la saison régulière incluant l’heure des matchs est maintenant disponible et les fans du CH peuvent s’attendre à quelques soirées tardives lorsque l’équipe joue à Vancouver.
Suite aux demi-finales d’hier soir au Championnat Mondial Junior, nous savons maintenant que l’un des espoirs du CH quittera Edmonton avec une médaille d’or au cou puisque le Canada et les États-Unis ont obtenu leur billet pour la finale. Le Canada a complétement dominé son match prenant la mesure de la Russie par la maque de 5-0 dans une partie ou Askarov n’était vraiment pas à son meilleur. Quant aux États-Unis, ce fut beaucoup moins facile. Avec moins de 5 minutes à faire, la Finlande a nivelé la marque à 3-3 et c’est finalement Arthur Kaliyev qui a mis fin à l’impasse en marquant avec une minute et 16 secondes à faire pour envoyer les américains en finale. Caufield a obtenu une passe dans le match et quelques chances de marquer sans toutefois trouver le fond du filet, il a également pris une mauvaise pénalité pour avoir retardé le match après avoir expédié la rondelle dans les gradins. Heureusement, la Finlande n’a pas su profiter de cet avantage numérique. Le match de la médaille d’or se déroulera ce soir à 9:30 PM.
