Within 10 minutes of the start of the game, the Canadiens were down by 2 in the desert. As François Gagnon pointed out, when the Canadiens go down 0-2 their record on the season was 0-11-0-0, when trailing by 2 at any point in the game, their record was 0-21-0-0. At that stage it was quite clear that it would take nothing short of a miracle for the Habs to come back and win the game and there was no miracle. At the final buzzer, the score was 5-2 Arizona and the Canadiens had consolidated their spot at the very bottom of the standings.
Earlier in the day, Chantal Machabée gave an in-depth injury update and here is the latest news: Paul Byron will join the team soon and Tyler Toffoli should play this week (way ahead of schedule), Jake Allen had an MRI this morning and there’s no update yet about how much time he’ll be missing, Brendan Gallagher is skating (and tweeting – see below) and could be back in 1 or 2 weeks. Joel Edmundson came back to Montreal yesterday, he had gone to his father’s funeral, as of now, there is no timeline for his return. Carey Price has now met with his doctor, he is pretty much starting the rehab process for his knee from scratch, there is no timetable for his return either.
With so many veterans getting ready to return, it was only a matter of time before some decisions had to be made and Alex Belzile was the first casualty, he was put on waivers in order to be sent back down to Laval. Meanwhile Michael Pezzetta was scratched for today’s game in favor of Laurent Dauphin and to be honest, that was a puzzling decision. Pezzetta has been doing everything that was asked of him and then some…but this is not the first puzzling decision of this season, far from it.

Au sifflet final, la marque était de 5-2 pour l’Arizona et le Tricolore avait consolidé sa position au dernier rang du classement.
Plus tôt aujourd’hui, Chantal Machabée a donné une mise-à-jour détaillées sur l’état de santé des troupes et voici ce qu’elle avait à dire : Paul Byron rejoindra l’équipe bientôt et Tyler Toffoli devrait jouer cette semaine (bien en avance sur l’échéancier initial), Jake Allen a passé un test de résonnance magnétique mais on ne sait pas encore combien de temps il devra manquer, Brendan Gallagher patine (et gazouille – voir plus bas) et il pourrait être de retour dans 1 ou 2 semaines. Joel Edmundson est rentré à Montréal hier, il était allé aux funérailles de son père, et pour l’instant, il n’y a pas d’échéancier pour son retour au jeu. Carey Price a rencontré son docteur et il reprend la réadaptation de son genou du début et il n’y a toujours pas de date de retour anticipée.
Avec tant de vétérans qui se rapproche d’un retour, c’était une question de temps avant que des décisions doivent être prises et Alex Belzile a été la première victime. L’équipe l’a soumis au ballotage afin de pouvoir le renvoyer avec le Rocket de Laval. Pendant ce temps, Michael Pezzetta a été rayé de l’alignement aujourd’hui en faveur de Laurent Dauphin, une décision qui en a fait sourciller plus d’un. Pezzetta a fait tout ce qui était demandé de lui et même plus…mais ce n’est pas la première décision douteuse que l’on voit cette année, loin de là.
