The games go by and they unfortunately all look the same, a never-ending rollercoaster ride in which the falls far outnumber the peeks. I’ve been reporting on the Habs for 3 years now, and for the first time ever, I feel like I am sounding like a broken record: faceoff struggles, incapacity to put in a 60-minute effort and far too many giveaways and turnovers.
The frustration is growing in Habs land and while most media outlets were saying a week ago that Calgary couldn’t possibly make the playoffs, they’re now only 4 points behind the Canadiens in 4th place. Sure, the CH still has 3 games in hand, but right now, those are far from being money in the bank.
In his return to the line-up, Joel Armia was barely visible and finished the night with a -2 rating and not much else. I’m puzzled as to why it was Jake Evans who made way for him in Ducharme’s team, the rookie coach always seems to go for the easy option. Evans is a young guy who won’t complain, but why not take out Eric Staal? He’s not done much since his first game when he scored the OT winner, he’s old, slow and he needs to rest now and again.
Both Suzuki and Toffoli ended their night with a -3 rating and I’ll admit I’m wondering if Toffoli is top shape. Normally, he gives a constant effort but tonight it wasn’t the case and he looked like he was moving gingerly quite often.
It was once again a bad night for the captain who committed the turnover which allowed the Flames to score their 3rd goal and seal the deal for all intents and purposes. It’s quite frankly painful to watch him lately, once a very efficient stay at home d-man, he now looks nervous in his own zone and it’s clearly affecting his decision making.
On the bright side, Brett Kulak scored his first goal of the season on a breakaway thanks to a second effort from Anderson and a good pass by Jonathan Drouin. Meanwhile, Jake Allen played a solid game according 3 goals on 33 shots. At the other end of the ice, Markstrom received 27 shots but once more, there were hardly any challenging shots.
Looking ahead, the Habs will have a chance for redemption on Friday night when they play the Flames at 6:00 PM and will then play Ottawa on Saturday at 4:00 PM. Needless to say that they need those points. Help could be coming soon as Ben Chiarot practiced with his teammates today and Carey Price also took the ice prior to the team’s practice. Today, we also learnt that the Toronto Marlies are now affected by Covid-19 and that their games have been postponed. This means that the Rocket will only play a single game (on April 21) before the 30th of April. Will Bergevin resist the temptation to recall Caufield?
Les matchs se suivent et se ressemblent présentement, un tour de montagnes russes sans fin qui comporte beaucoup plus de descentes que de sommets. Je couvre le CH depuis 3 ans maintenant et pour la première fois, j’ai l’impression de me répéter match après match: difficultés au cercle des mise en jeu, incapacité de donner un effort constant de 60 minutes et beaucoup trop de cadeaux et de revirements.
La frustration monte chez les partisans et alors que la plupart des médias disaient il y a une semaine que Calgary ne pouvait à toutes fins pratiques se qualifier pour les séries, les Flames ne sont maintenant qu’à 4 points du CH et de la 4e position. Oui, le Tricolore possède 3 matchs en main, mais pour l’instant, c’est loin d’être garanti qu’il remportera ces duels.
De retour au jeu ce soir, Joel Armia était à peine visible sur la patinoire, il a terminé sa soirée avec un -2 et pas grand-chose d’autre. Je suis perplexe face à la décision de rayer Evans de l’alignement pour lui faire de la place, le coach recru semble toujours choisir l’option facile. Evans est jeune et il ne se plaindra pas, mais pourquoi ne pas plutôt retirer Eric Staal de l’alignement? Il n’a rien cassé depuis son arrive outre son but gagnant en prolongation lors de son match initial, il est vieux, lent et il a besoin de se reposer de temps à autre.
Tant Suzuki que Toffoli ont obtenu un -3 ce soir et je l’admets, je m’interroge quant à l’état de santé de Toffoli. Normalement, il fournit un effort constant mais ce ne fut pas le cas ce soir, et il semblait bouger prudemment à plusieurs reprises.
Une fois de plus, ce fu tune dure soirée pour le capitaine qui s’est rendu coupable du revirement qui a permis aux Flames d’enfiler leur 3e but et de mettre le clou dans le cercueil figuratif du CH. Honnêtement, ça devient douloureux de le regarder œuvrer, lui qui était autrefois un excellent défenseur défensif, il a maintenant l’air nerveux dans sa propre zone et ça affecte clairement sa prise de décision.
Si on veut voir le bon côté des choses, Brett Kulak a marqué son premier but de la saison lors d’un échappé créé par un bon deuxième effort de Josh Anderson et une bonne passe de Drouin. Jake Allen a été solide dans l’ensemble, accordant 3 buts sur 33 tirs. À l’autre bout de la surface glacée, Markstrom a reçu 27 tirs et bien peu de ceux-ci étaient vraiment menaçant.
Si on regarde vers l’avant, les Habs auront une chance de se reprendre vendre à 6:00 PM quand ils affronteront de nouveau Calgary et ils joueront ensuite contre Ottawa à 4:00 PM samedi. Je n’ai probablement pas besoin de vous dire qu’ils ont vraiment besoin de ces points. Des renforts pourraient être disponibles sous peu alors que Ben Chiarot a patiné avec ses coéquipiers ce matin et que Carey Price a patiné avant la pratique. Aujourd’hui, nous avons également appris que la Covid s’était invite dans le vestiaire des Marlies et que leurs matchs seront remis. Cela signifie que d’ici le 30 avril, le Rocket ne jouera qu’un seul match, le 21 avril, avant le 30. Est-ce que Marc Bergevin pourra résister à la tentation de rappeler Caufield?
